| Bathing with your Yorkie and my terrible accident. I have bathed with our Yorkies for a while now, and I have always found it to be an easy way to bathe them while I am relaxing. We got a new puppy about a week ago, and he was a really cute one. He was a bit fat, at 3 and a half pounds at 9 weeks of age, but he was still cute. I think he had a "baby doll" face too. I took him in the bath and let him swim around, and it was definitely cute. He was doing so well. I stepped away for a few seconds to get a towel before I got back in the bath, and when I returned he was sinking to the bottom. I took him out and was panicing! Blood came out of his mouth into the water. I put him on the ground and wondered what to do, when he started coming back to life. He laid there and was breathing rapidly for a while, and eventually got the power to get up and move around slowly. He started gagging and acting as if he needed to vomit something out, but nothing came out. I asked a few of my friends what I should do, and they assumed he had water in his lungs and I should go to vet. That's exactly what I did, and the vet said they did all they could for him and his prognosis was mixed. Well, about an hour later, he died beside me on my bed. His breathing was obviously labored and was getting worse and worse. I just knew that he wasn't going to make it and it was just horrible. He started barking like 50 times in a row, and at the end his barks just tapered off and got weaker and weaker. He coughed up blood and that was it...I had lost my puppy because of a stupid drowning accident. I feel horrible about this. I was wondering if any of you ever take baths with your Yorkies, or if you even let them in water in which they have to swim (like pools)?? |

| What an awful tragedy. I am so sorry for your loss and all the feelings that go along with any loss, let alone a tragic one. But your story will remind all of us to be careful. By sharing your painful story, your little guy's accident will prevent many more, I'm sure.

| how deep was the water? 9 week old puppy is small to be swimming. Its like leaving an infant in the tub and walking away.

I Love My Lil' Punkin's Donating Member | OMG. I don't even know what to say. I am SO SORRY. I seriously hope no one here says anything rude to you about this - or tries to LECTURE you about the puppies age or anything - that would really be just WRONG You made a mistake - an accident - and accidents happen EVERY DAY. I can just tell by reading your post how awful you feel...and I certainly hope people here can respect that and leave the negative and lecturing comments OUT. They aren't needed here. God Bless you and your little pup This was just such an awful thing that happened and I truly am so very sorry

| Thanks for the kind words everybody. I thought it would be great to get another Yorkie, for companionship to both me and our older Yorkie. Maybe I'll get another one down the road, but for now I guess I need to back off of that. As of yesterday, we're actually fostering a dachsund here for a friend that needed somebody to take care of him for a few months so maybe he can be the friend our adult needs? |

| What a tragic accident! Don't beat yourself up over this, we all make mistakes and learn from them. RIP Teddy.
