That might explain our experience: We just flew back East with Eddie, and we did not get one foot on the plane before the flight attendant snapped: "That dog needs to stay in its carrier at all times!" My wife, loaded down with two carry-ons and the dog, said "I know. I hope ..." She was going to say "I hope he's not going to be a problem," when the flight attendant leaned over to a co-worker and said "Yeah, she better hope." That just amazed us that we paid $160 round-trip to fly with our dog, we follow all the rules, and we get an attitude like that.

It is examples like what you posted that is the reason I posted encouragement earlier that if anyone is contemplating flying with their pup, prepare your pup to have to remain in their carrier for the duration of your trip just in case the rules are enforced.

Exceptions to the rules happen but you can't count on them!

When I picked up Otis from Los Angeles, he was a tiny baby, maybe 4 or 5 pounds at the most.

The plane was sooo loud and he was so tiny. I felt so sorry for him, I took him out of his carrier and shoved him inside the jacket I was wearing, and zipped it up. I then threw a blanket over myself. We flew the entire way like that, and no one ever knew. Not even the person next to me. Otis knew I was hiding him from a scary loud airplane, and he knew to be still and quiet.

I still remember him looking up at me, zipped up inside my jacket, with his chin on my chest. He didn't take his eyes off me one time the entire 55 minute filght. It was a real bonding moment.

That is sooo sweet! I bet that was your bonding moment! From then on, he knew that you were going to be the person to protect him forever! That is a great story!

That is so rude! I would have written a letter to the Airline if that happened to me. Like you said, you paid for your dog's trip and you were following the rules- there is no need for rudeness like that. Awful customer service.

I think, for me, anyways, this is one of those areas where our responsibility for protecting our babies takes precedence over the airline "rules". Except for the time taxiing, take off and landing, there is no reason your baby cannot be comforted by you in whatever means you feel is necessary. The stories described here didn't harm anyone and our babies are soooo small...they are less of a nuisance than a human baby or toddler, IMO. What is the worst they could do, ask you to put him back in his carrier if you are discovered? I have no problem with "bending the rules" when it comes to the comfort and safety of my babies. They wouldn't expect you to keep a human baby confined for an entire flight. I think it is cruel to expect it of our furbabies.

I agree. I would have definitely written a letter and expressed my opinion about that treatment. I think the airlines are becoming more accommodating as they are fighting for the consumer dollar and more people are travelling with their dogs.

I can find these treats you mention online, but since I am leaving on Saturday, do you know of any store chain that carries them? I didn't see them on petsmart.com
