| Is She Pregnant? Hi, This is my first time posting but I hope you all can help me out. My little girl, Daisy Mae, is now 10 months old and back in June (8 months of age) she got stuck with my husband's dog (not a yorkie). (long story there) I was sure I marked on the calander her first day of heat as well as when they got stuck, but apparently I didn't. I am sure when it happened that I had calculated and if she were pregnant she would be due around Aug 19, so any day now. Ok, now to my questions...this was Daisy's first heat and it was also the male's first stud. I phoned the vet immediately when this happened and they said that with this being her first heat and his first time that the chances of her being pg were slim. Also, he only has one testicle, so they said his chances of being able to breed her were ven more slim. Basically, after all the info I was given, my husband and I decided that the chance of her actually beign pg was so slim that we would just leave everything be. Well, now that it's close to her due date, if she were pregnant, I have started to notice some symptoms that I had been told about. I don't think she looks pregnant but she does feel heavier and also I've been noticing that her tummy area seems fatty...not big pregnant but just fatty feeling skin. She has been doing a lot of scratching and the male has really been sniffing at her bottom non-stop. I haven't noticed any discharge. She has been sleeping alot, but she has always been a sleeper. She has been much more affectionate towards me but that is on and off also. I'm just wondering what everyone thinks of this...I know there isn't really much to go on with my post. Up until the last two weeks or so I was sure she wasn't pregnant but the past two weeks she just seems to be acting a little different. I don't want to take her for an x-ray because I did this in the past with my other dog and it wasn't quite right, so I just don't put much into the whole x-ray thing. Thanks for any help you can offer! Again, sorry this is so rambled and not much to go on! Coral |

| She very well could be pregnant. I'm really surprised that your vet said that chances of her getting pregnant were slim because it was her first heat and his first time because that's just not true. First timers may have a harder time actually tieing but there is just as much chance of getting pregnant as if they had bred before. Now the one testical thing - that might make the chances a little less - but even one testical means sperm - which can make her pregnant. It's possible that she is only having one or two puppies and that her belly just doesn't look very big. Is the male larger than your female? If so and she's having a very small litter, the puppies could be too large for her to deliver on her own. I would take her to the vet to find out if she is pregnant or not. The vet can palpate her abdomen to feel for puppies and do an X-ray.

| I forgot to mention the male. He is twice the size of my girl. She is approx. 5 1/2 lbs and he is 12 lbs. That was another thing I had talked to the vet about as I thought the male should be smaller, or at least comparable in size but they said the pups grow according to the mom's size. I think I will call the vet tomorrow and take her in just to be sure. I tried feeling her tummy (sorry, can't remember the correct term for it) to see if I could feel anything different but I don't know exactly what I should or shouldn't be feeling, so that didn't work out so well for me. Thanks for your help! |

Donating YT 2000 Club Member | If she was indeed mated, you need to take her to the vet for that x-ray. It tells the vet not only how many puppies but also if the puppies can make it through the birth canal. Your dog may need a C-section since the male was so large--don't waste time --get that girl to the vet for the x-ray. And after she delivers--and hopefully survives, have that girl spayed immediately. JMHO. |

| If I wanted her spayed I would have done so already. Like I said earlier, long story and completely out of my hands but accidents happen. As for the x-ray, I had that done before with another dog and it was all wrong, so I don't put much faith in them, but I will call the vet in the morning and get her in...hopefully it will work out better this time. Thanks. |

| From what you've said your vet has told you, I think I might be looking for a new vet. For example, slim chance of her being pregnant since this was their first mating (doesn't matter if it's the first or tenth time - can still get pregnant easily), very little chance since the male only has one testicle (still has one testicle...), saying pups grow according to mom only (only partially true - with a male more than twice her size the pups could easily grow to be too large for her to naturally give birth to ESPECIALLY if she happens to only be pregnant with one or possibly two), and then problems with an X-Ray before (vet not knowing what he's looking for??). Just sounds like your vet isn't exactly up on everything... I meant to say this in my first post and forgot - if your male has one descended testicle and one inside the body, you really need to have him neutered (or at least the nondescended testicle removed). If you don't, your male will most likely develop cancer from the retained testicle. If you don't want to do an X-ray, you can opt for an ultrasound.

| Yeah, he is being neutered...supposed to have been done already but my husband is having a hard time taking his boy's 'manliness' away. lol He was hoping to stud him out at least once first as he is from a champion bloodline (he's a toy fox terrier) but I've convinced him now that it's time to have it done...his companion is much more important! The testicle has come down some but not enough to not turn cancerous. I am going to call a different vet tomorrow and get Daisy Mae in ASAP! Thanks for everything! p.s. Your puppies are adorable! |
