| ![]() hello all- My puppy is 9 1/2 weeks and I have been crate training him. Usually he has been very good. He'll whine for a couple of minutes but then fall right to sleep. Tonight he was going crazy, he was squealing and barking. I work nights right now, so I had to leave him like that...and I feel terrible. I took him in for his shots yesterday. I use his carrier for crating him, so maybe he is associating his carrier with going to the vet. But I heard after some time they get used to their crate and they enjoy being in there...but how long does that take (usually)? He was sleeping in there today with the door open so I thought he was getting used to it. Any how if anyone could let me know if this normal and he'll be ok? thanks |

| ![]() DONT GIVE UP....crating is a big favor you are doing for your pet. This is the third dog I crate train, and Chelsea now goes in by herself, its well worth the waiting and work. I got her when she was 9 weeks, and she was immediately put in a crate, at night, and while we were not home. Now, she is 2.5 yrs old, and its her own private space in the house. When we have guests over, she is kept in her crate, for safety reasons, especailly, while we are eating. She lets us know, when she wants her potty break, and usually then she is allowed to visit with the guests. During the day, if I cant find her, she is usually in her crate, she has two, one in our bedroom, and one in the office. IF she sees me getting ready to leave the house, she goes and waits in the crate for me. I put a small bowl of food and water, if she is going to spend more than an hr in there, while I am gone. Good luck with your training, just be patient...it DOES work.

| ![]() I agree - crate training is great. It gives the pup somewhere to feel safe and gives you a little more freedom. Coby goes in voluntarily when I'm getting ready to leave and he can't go, and sometimes goes in when he's getting a treat for something else (I guess he equates it with treats because he gets one everytime I have to put him in there.) It sounds like you're doing fine. If he chose to nap in there today, he does like it. I'd follow some of the suggestions with treats and scented clothing. Sometimes, Coby is wound up and doesn't want to be in his kennel. In those times, he likes to bark and scratch. What works for me is to just cover the kennel completely like a bird's cage. He quiets right down and goes to sleep. This is the second yorkie that it's worked with. So you might try that along with everything else you're doing. Sounds like it'll work out just fine. ![]()

| ![]() Kingston loves his crate. The first couple of days we had him, he slept with us then we would transfer him to his crate when he was good and sleepy. Now he goes into his crate by himself. I think he likes his privacy. |
