| Potty on walk Hello!! I have a dilemma. My baby only pees in her outside pen. She is inside the house all day, in the kitchen with a doggy gate up. The dog walker comes and walks her at noon, and she never goes on her walk, she goes in the pen after the walk. At night, same thing. She gets lots of walks, but never goes to the washroom. #2 - NEVER for sure. I have now started to take her to Doggy Day Care so she can see what other doggies do. And she goes on the walk, and comes back and pees in the daycare room (argh) We don't have mistakes at home anymore, but that's because she has the pen. The pen is on the cement patio, we don't have any grass. I pick her up and put her in the pen every day.....so it's not like she just goes running out the door and goes and does her business. It's a routine. I'm getting frustrated. We are going away this weekend to family in another province and we have to bring her pen so she doesn't go in their house. Has anyone else had a similar problem? Please let me know if you did how you solved it...... Thanks |

| When she goes for walks, is she walking on grass? Maybe to her the grass feels like carpet (if you have carpet in the house) and she knows not to go there. I'm not really sure what else it could be... Does she show signs when she has to go? Maybe if you know she has to pee soon, take her for a walk then. If she can't hold it for the whole walk and just goes, praise her to let her know it's okay to pee while she's out for a walk.

| I have the same problem with Paddington!!!! I walk him for about an hour every evening, and he NEVER goes! He'll come inside and go on the floor. During training class, we'll take our dogs out to potty, and he won't go while we are outside in the potty area- but he will go right in the middle of the training pen, when all the other doggies and mommies are watching I mean we JUST went out! He pees and poops outside at home, but nowhere else outside. He just sniffs where other dogs have peed. I think my problem is that I have trained him to go on a pad as well as outside. I think it confused him, but I had no choice but to do it this way. I wish I had a solution, but I just wanted to share empathy with you! I hope someone has solved this problem in the past -O

| It sounds like she's confused, since she goes in the pen everyday. What I would do is, instead of putting her in the pen first thing in the morning, I would take her outside on her leash for a little walk (if you can). Take treats with you. I think there's more of a chance of her going after sleeping all night. When she goes, give her TONS of praise and treats. Maybe that will help her get the idea that she can go outside, even if she's not in the pen. Does she go on pee pads in the pen? If so, maybe even try putting a pad on the ground until she gets the idea. Good luck!

| Thanks for the info. I had tried the walking first thing in the morning when she was littler, and that's why I got the pen, because she wouldn't go and I had to get ready for work. I could try again. I had someone suggest that we put lawn turf in the pen, so she sees that it's ok to go on grass, and then maybe she will eventually go on grass?? She does have a potty pad in the pen, and I do take potty pads when we go out, and she has never gone on it yet. She just looks at it....walks around, and then will go inside at whoever's house we are at (it makes me so sad because she IS trained in my eyes, but not to my friend's eyes!) |
