| Folic Acid? Hello Yorkie lovers!!! My yorkie baby is in heat and I have heard breeders giving their bitches folic acid to prevent cleft lip. I have heard many small breeds who were born with cleft lip and would like to prevent it. I recently purchased on the internet some liquid folic acid but I don't know how much to give my little yorkie. She is about 4 and a half pounds. Please help! |

| I know it is important for human women to consume folic acid when they are planning on having children, but I never heard of dogs taking it. I guess it makes sense. Sorry, I'm no help; I just like responding tonight I guess! -O

| Hmmm...Well, I add vitamin b-complex to my dogs' homemade food which includes folid acid which is supposed to be good for them, but I have no clue about pregnant dogs... My recommendation is to definitely check with your vet first!!

| I believe that whatever the body doesn't use/need will be flushed from her system, but ask your vet. He/she might be able to recommend a nutritionalist that can give you a proper dosing for your girl. Many dry kibbles have folic acid in them and so you may not need to supplement. More and more are also adding DHA and I imagine ARA isn't too far behind. These are all things they advise pregnant women to be on and I know that a friend of mine that runs an exotic cat facility gives his felines these suppliments as well during pregnancy and lactation. jm2c. |
