| OMG! 2 yr old kicked Sugar Okay, I'm kinda in shock right now. I'm so angry. I'm babysitting my friend's 2 yr old little girl & 10 yr old son. They've been here about 1 hour and I just happened to be out of the room for one minute - I was in the kitchen which is open into the living room where Sugar was laying. I walked back into the lr & the little girl was saying, "I kick Sugar" and I saw that she was kicking Sugar in the head over & over. Luckily she was doing it gently, but still, I couldn't believe it! I put her in time out, I don't know that she's ever been in time out before, and she was not happy. She tried to kick me so I held her in my lap while she was in time out. I let her out after about 1 minute and told her she had to tell Sugar that she was sorry. She threw a fit & refused. I tried for a while & she wouldn't do it so it was back to time out again. I kept calmly explaining that we don't hit, kick, or bite in this house and that includes the animals. She's tried to hit & bite my 5 yr old daughter before when she didn't get her way. Anyway, she finally, grudgingly, said that she was sorry. Sugar sat & watched all of this happening just like she was waiting for an apology. After all that I asked her brother if she kicks their cat and he said that she's very mean to their cat. This is just unbelievable because the older 2 kids are very well behaved & weren't allowed to misbehave when they were little. This little girl was a surprise & she's 8 yrs younger than one & 10 yrs younger than the oldest. I'm just hoping that this doesn't turn Sugar against kids. She has the sweetest disposition & she loves everyone. I'm trying to keep her right at my side now but she wants to go check on the kids. I think she thinks she's missing out on the fun. Has anyone else had this happen before? Any suggestions to help make sure Sugar doesn't take this too personally? I had both of my girls give Sugar a big hug so that she'll know they felt sorry for her. Sorry for the long post, I'm just so frustrated I could scream! Hopefully the next 2 1/2 hours fly by!

I think your friend might be a bit slacking with her discipline because she is a baby and probably her only girl. She better tighten up the reigns because that is only going to get worse. The terrible twos are kicking in and if she doesn't watch that and set some rules that child will be a monster.

| Hard lesson learned for you - you really can't trust kids that young with dogs. What I'd do now if I were you is have the 2 kids give Sugar some yummy treats. Then, I'd keep Sugar separated from them for a while. Then, I'd repeat the process several times so that Sugar decides kids = yummy treats.

| How is Sugar reacting right now? I had something similar happen at PetSmart. A 2-3 yr old boy walks to Rosie and pinches her hear and twist her ear. She screamed real loud and everyone looked at us. The kid was laughing when he did this. Today, Rosie loves kids and ppl. She will crawl up to them and let them pet her. I wouldn't worry too much about Sugar becoming scared of kids because of one time; however, I would watch Sugar real closely to make sure the kid doesn't do this anymore. |

| I would put up a baby gate between Sugar and the kids. That way Sugar can still see but the 2 yr old can't hurt her.

| I don't think it hurt Sugar because she didn't yelp or even move away. I think she was in shock also. I don't think she kicked her hard enough to hurt, but a 2 yr old can't judge how hard is too hard. Sugar's acting fine, she doesn't act scared at all. It probably helps that the kids are eating graham crackers & Sugar's watching them like a hawk hoping they'll drop some crumbs. I wish I could put up a baby gate but my house is an open floor plan and I don't have anywhere to put up a baby gate...except the laundry room which has a gate up to keep Sugar out of the litter box. She'd love it if I put her in there...all the "cat snacks" she could eat! lol I definitely learned my lesson about walking out of the room, even though the rooms are open & attached. I think Sugar's just such a calm dog & my kids are both older and after the kids had been here about 1/2 an hour I didn't think before I left the room. The little girl was in the study when I walked into the kitchen but they move so quickly & quietly that I didn't know she'd come into the lr until I walked back in...like I said, I just walked into the kitchen for a minute to throw something in the trash. My bad though, I'm so glad my youngest is 5 now. There's such a huge difference between a 2 yr old & a 5 yr old...whew! I'm worn out already! I do think I'll go get a treat to let the 2 yr old give to Sugar now, that's a great idea. Thanks for listening!

| I'm sure that even if I didn't tell my friend that my girls would. I can guarantee that it will be the first thing out of their mouths when she walks in the door! I'm just hoping they don't embellish the story too much. You never know what's going to come out of kids mouths.
