Hi I read your board often and have found a ton of helpful information. I have a question regarding tear stains. Not sure that Yorkies have this problem but I have a 6 month old Silky Terrier and he is silver and has orangish tear stains. I do wash his face daily and clean out his eyes but the stains stay. He has been to the vet and does not have any infection. I have seen products that say they remove the stains but there are a million of them. Do you have any recommendations on how to remove them. Thank you.

I've heard of bleaching cremes but this should be done by a professional. My mother has a maltese and the tear stains are hard to keep up with. We were told to wipe the stains with regular household peroxide but be careful to not get it in their eyes. This has lightened them up tremendously but the stains are still there.

My friend and her mother both have malteses and they use distilled water to clean their eyes. I don't think it would work to get rid of the tear stains but once you've gotten rid of them it may help to keep them away. My friend swears by it, she also believes that it helps to keep their eyes from watering more.

Poochie is already orange due to being part Pom, but I have read on another doggie forum that giving your pup plain yogurt, just a tablespoon every day or so, will help to prevent the tears from staining. I have heard that this works WONDERS!!

With yorkies - I have heard that cold tea is good .. keep meaning to try it on our Gypsy Rose but we don't drink tea..!! Ana xx

we use something called SHAWS: PRETTY EYES LOTION for Buddy, too keep his eyes clean. it really works, you could give it a go.

I have maltese. The peroxide does work to lighten it up a bit. However the better solution may be to try to figure out why the staining is there if you can. My mom's maltese had terrible problems until we switched her food. Beet pulp can cause staining. We switched her to Chicken Soup for the dog lover's soul. The staining disappeared and eyes dried up in about 2 weeks. It was amazing, she is sparkling white for the first time in her life! There is another solution that works that I just read on the maltese board. You use denture cleaner tablets disolved in a little water. You rub it on with a cotton ball, wipe it off with a dry one and then leave it on the hair. It really works to remove the stains.

Maggie was having problems with the tearing eyes. I consulted the breeder. She said to clip the little wild hairs just at the area of the tear gland (inside corner of the eye) with round end scissors. Might even wait until they are sleeping. I did this and Maggie's eyes quit running.

Our new grandpup, Jackson is a purebred white Westie. My daughter feeds him the food recommended by the breeder that keeps his little face snow white. But ... I have never in my entire life smelled such horrendous smelling poop [he is pad trained]!! He pooped at my house and cleared the room!!!

I will ask her the name of the food.

I just wanted to say thank you to all of the replies that I received. I am going to look at changing his food, maybe something with no colors added and I will check into the rest of the recommendations. Once again thank you. I will probably have more questions as this is our first small dog and he seems to require a whole lot more attention then our "big dog" even though Hulk seems to think he is the "big dog" lol.

This is what I do with my girls though I use a tiny 1 cm trimmer and carefully remove the hair right under their eyes and between the eyes....It seems to help with the watery eyes also when they don't have that hair there...
