I've searched the forums for info on this, but maybe I searched wrong, because I couldn't find anything

Whenever we come home, or Sadie just wants us to pay her attention (which we do all the time anyway, LOL), she jumps up to us and lays on her back. It's the cutest thing, but I was just wondering if anyone knew why she did it? Is it just because she likes her belly rubbed, or is it more psychological, like she's showing us she's submissive?

When dogs do that with other dogs it means they are being submissive, so I would say it would be the same for humans. Sorry not much help, but I am sure others will have some better answers for you...

When, they're showing signs of being submissive, is it because they are "afraid" of us? If that's it, I really can't imagine why--we are NOT mean in any way, shape or form to our little peanut. We play with her all the time, always praise her for every little thing, she has all of our constant attention, and she doesn't seem to be "high-strung" or freak out about anything.

I mean, Sadie lives the "good life," where she's got two parents who give her their constant attention, and she pretty much gets whatever she wants (within reason, hence the name SadieSaysYes, lol)

Aww, I feel bad! I hope that shes' not being "submissive" because she's frightened! I don't know why she would be!

No, it's okay! She respects you and wants to please you, which is great! Submissive isn't the same as "afraid", not at all. It's about respect.

So, don't beat yourself up - instead, congratulate yourself on the proper "pack-order" in your house. She sounds like a little sweetie.

Our Gucci does this and also if you call his name like you want him to come, instead of running away (like JoJo) he will crouch down! This just seems to be in line with his more submissive personality. He is a sweetheart and wants to please and and be obedient. I have no doubt he always received the best of care and this is just his personality.

JoJo, who seems to be the alpha dog, is not as generous in giving us his belly to rub! Although he loves affection as well, it's on his back, head, etc.

Ooooh! Okay! Yay! LOL You know, she IS a little sweetie; she is such a good girl. She just loves to be with us, which is good, because we love to spoil her. She's almost 9 months, and 100% pee-pee pad trained; we don't even crate her anymore, she has the run of the house while we're gone (which isn't a lot; we live in a 600 square foot condo, LOL), and it's VERY rare that she'll chew or cause any trouble at all.

The one thing she DOES do...is when we come home after a good amount of time, and she's been by herself, when we walk in, she can't hold her bladder and kind of "lets go" all over the floor as she's running up to us...It's kind of frustrating, but I know she can't help it; she's excited, and she's got a TEENY bladder (I think she's about 3.5 lbs). Does anyone else have this problem? (Hijacked my own thread, LOL)

Sadie does this, too! On the rare occasion that she IS being naughty, we say "Saaaadie..." in a stern voice, and her ears kind of go back and she comes basically crawling towards us....it's impossible to be frustrated when it's like she's saying "I know...I was bad...but it wasn't my fault, mommy.." LOL Goodness I love this peanut...

How can you even correct her when she's being so cute!

You can try a doggy diaper just for those moments. Put it on when you leave -
no mess when you come home and nobody feels bad. Just a thought.

My ex-husb dogs did the submissive urination thing only when I came home. He would walk in the door first and let them out to potty and then I came in after they were distracted. My shih poo did it when he was younger but he has grown out of it. There are some hints you can try when you come in the door....kneel down to her when getting your "mommy's home" lovin, speak in a soft voice or not at all. (so hard NOT to talk to them when you come in) .....Or just make sure there is a rug or towel down right inside the door where she greets you.

I think you've already gotten your answer to the first question...but just thought I'd throw in that our pitbull, yes pitbull, cowers down and rolls onto her back when we bring the little dogs out to "visit" her! So I highly doubt this BIG girl is scared of those little babies when she does this!! It is definately showing that she is ok with them and is welcoming their curiousity and affection!

With my Duke Was with me he got so excited when I came home he'd pee everywhere. I started just not saying anything at all to him for just a minute or two. enough time to put down the stuff I was carrying but it gave him time to calm down so that when I did greet him he didn't potty.

About the first question, though He was being submissive...Duke didn't often do that but my last memory of him was the morning I left for work and he rolled over and a spent a minute or two rubbing his belly. That was our last time together. and I'm so glad I stopped to notice him.

I'm glad you asked this question because my little maltese is the exact same way. She jumps up and then turns over like she's being submissive, and she's nothing but totally spoiled!! LOL
