My furkids Donating Member | Gotta question Morning everyone and Happy Memorial Day! Hope you all have a fun day! I am seriously thinking about changing my vet. The Vet I am currently bringing the girls to is very good. (I worked for him many many years ago) However, the last couple of times I've brought the girls there I haven't gotten the same feeling from them...I didn't feel that warm and cozy feeling like I used to feel. My Parents also use this vet and like him very much. They have done free treatments on Heidi (she's a very sick little girl) and have let them make payments on some of their bills. (My parents have been going to this vet for years also). I asked a while ago what the cost would be to spay the girls..... Sadie is 3 yrs, 6 lbs and, had 3 heats....I was told it could cost up to $500.00. Lillie, is 11 months old 4 lbs, and no heats and they told me up to $400.00. I had asked my vet (Friday) if I could make payments on the bill...He had a real funny look on his face so I said "well, if I give you half down can I make payments on the rest?" He hesitantly said yes and walked out of the room....He never said good bye or anything so I didn't know wether or not he was even done with me...so I walked out of the room and asked the girl at the desk if I was done and she said yes....AND....the Office manager (that I use to work with and been there over 20 yrs) has been such a bi**ch lately wouldn't even respond to me when I came in or left...I was at a party yesterday and met the vet that just opened a practice about 5 minutes from me...She is young and loves what she does. I asked her many, many questions and never got huffy or upset with anything I asked her...She was very nice. Her and her husband hang with the same crowd as me and hubby...I was hesitant at first because I felt so comfortable with my other vet. After talking to her for a while I have made my decision to change..(I HATE change!) She has invited me to visit the clinic and would give me a tour and explain everything and anything to me. She also does laser for her spays...I know the right kind of anesthesia is important to use...I thought Isoflorine was the safest...she told me that Isoflorine isn't a bad anesthesia but, the one that is used now is Sevoflorine...a much gentler anesthesia that when shut off the animal wakes up in minutes.... Have any of you heard of or, has your vet used this type on anesthesia? She told me that it was mostly used in geriatric animals because it is such a gentle anesthesia... Sorry this is so long girls (and guy) but, these are my babies and I only want the best for them Thanks everyone!

| Haven't heard of sevoflorine, but it sounds good. The new vet sounds really nice, I would definitely give her a try!

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | Girl - if you feel uncomfortable - CHANGE !! our instincts are what we need to listen to - not what other people say ....and while I'm glad your parents are happy ....if you aren'tm then time to change. I just learned a hard lesson with my cockers vet....I had a bad feeling about him and won't go into details but he just pulled something that in my opinion is against the law with Tessas ear medication - (he sold me a mix when I thought I was buying a name brand and mixed eardrops with EYEDROPS!) I SHOULD have listened to my little voice.... on the younger vet ...I think it's great to go to a younger vet because they seem to strive harder to help since they're just getting started - the downside is the lack of experience. I don't know what to tell you but I will say this - listen to your feelings and you can't go wrong. |

OMG! EARDROPS AND EYEDROPS!! What the HE** was he thinking!!! I agree with you and I have always said you have to go with your gut...I know he's a good vet and all but, I just haven't been feeling wanted (?) there the last couple of times...Almost like I'm being ignored...Friday was the last straw! I had been thinking about changing and, after Friday's appt and, talking to this new vet, my mind has been made up.

My furkids Donating Member | That is what the "new" vet had said...she said it is a more gentler anesthia and they come out of it quicker and their not so doppy...

| Yes, I say if you are not comfortable with them anymore than change!!! I took my cats to the same vet for years! It was an animal shelter/hospital, so not only were things a little cheaper than at other vets, but all the profit went back into the shelter! I really liked it there for years- all the vets really knew what they were doing, and I got wonderful service! Then they got a new owner. I kept going because I wanted to support the animal shelter, and they knew my little kitties soooo well! But slowly they started to degrade; most of the vets left so new doctors came, the place got dirty, and more expensive. My last straw was when my ex-husband (behind my back, against my wishes!) took my babies to be declawed. The younger cat had to stay at the vets for an extra week, because they screwed up his paws so badly! Even after we took him home, he kept bleeding and couldn't even walk! He was in so much pain that when I went to pick him up, discovered that he had chewed his legs until they were bleeding severely- and they were supposed to be "monitoring" him!!!!! I was so angry; I should have changed vets when I first felt leary of them! Now I'm taking Paddington to a very reputable vet in the area. Everyone I know goes to them, and even though they are slightly more expensive I am willing to pay when it comes to the safety of my baby!!!! -O

My furkids Donating Member | What really bothered me is when I asked about making payments for their spays. The vet really didn't like that idea but, they certainly push for you to have it done (which I agree, they should) but, I also feel that they should work with their patients (parents) and have some kind of a payment plan...especially when they charge so much money. I would be paying, for both girls,(with the vet I'm going to be leaving) almost what I paid for Sadie. That's just insane!

| Go with your instincts for sure, but if you do change Vets. then let them know exactly why your leaving. My Vet. is a specialist, and I just had one spayed a week ago and even had a radiograph and this was the list: 1 Ovariohysterectomy $150.00 and 1 Radiograph & interpretation $125.00. The total was only $275.00. I would also ask your local animal shelter where the low cost spay and neuter clinic is. |

| We just switched vets recently. Ellie has now gone through 3 vet offices. The first one seemed to be drinking on the job and he wasn't the friendliest, the second was very nice but he is about 20 minutes away and is a farm vet so we figured he that his specialty isn't small dogs. Now we go to an animal hospital that is open 24/7. They have a ton of vets and we found one we like. There are still problems though. First, they gave two vaccines at the same time (never will we allow that again) and they are very expensive. It cost $620.00 to get some dental work done. Ellie has periodontal disease. Everything is way overpriced there but we will stick with them and hope they don't do anything stupid. Finding a vet is SOOO hard, especially for smaller dogs.
