I see many people on here recommending or giving their yorkies nutrical. I am a new yorkie mom and I was just wondering what exactly it is and what it's used for. Thanks in advance!

well i use it to keep my yorkie babies blood sugar stable (he's hypoglycemic) others use it for a supplement if thoer pup is underweight or not eating well.

heres what i found
Nutrical is a high calorie, low volume dietary supplement for dogs and cats that won't eat. It provides an additional source of energy for hunting and working dogs. Dosage: To use as a supplement - Give 1 and 1/2 teaspoons per 10 lbs. body weight once a day. To use when your pet is not eating well - Give 3 teaspoons per 10 lbs. body weight. Each teaspoon of Nutri-Cal equals 30 calories of nutrition. Available in 4.25 oz. tube.

Congrats on your new baby!

I used Nutrical with Riley for months. Yorkies are so small sometimes their blood sugar drops very quickly. I always put some on my finger the last thing at night & the first thing in the morning.She would lick it right off my finger. She was always a good eater but I gave it just as a precaution. Some on this site, give Nutrical more often. I guess you just have to "know" your baby.

I would definitely reccomend getting nutrical. I think that everyone bringing home a small-breed puppy should have some on hand. Have you read about the dangers of hypoglycemia in yorkies? If you haven't, you definitely should read up on it, it can strike at any moment and lead to death in a small dog...its very scary stuff. Basically, Nutrical is what you give your dog to stabilize his blood sugar levels if he's showing signs of hypoglycemia. Its also good to have around when a puppy isn't eating well, to make sure he's still getting a descent intake of calories. You can get Nutrical at Petco or Petsmart.

Hi and thanks for the responses..yes, I have heard of hypoglycemia and read about other illnesses that are common in small dogs ( I have been reading like crazy!) Our baby, Lily, eats very well and is very healthy. That is why I was asking if I should possibly try nutrical. I suppose it wouldn't hurt to have just in case.

Bailey, being less than a half pound when I first got her was being treated for hypoglycemia shes 6 months and still less than 2 lbs... Anyway my point was Does anyone elses baby go CRAZY for nutrical...? Whenever Bailey sees that blue and white tube, SHE GOES CRAZY! My boyfriend calls it her "doggy crack"

Wobie didn't go crazy at first...now he does! I definitely can't leave the tube within his reach, because he'd eat the whole thing! "Doggy crack"...yes!

Traveling can be stressful on dogs, so I'd recommend having some around just for that. Eddie stopped eating on a three-day camping trip one time, and I was glad I had the nutrical to make sure he was getting some calories. Another time, Jack freaked out on a plane flight. I wasn't sure if he was having seizures or what, but nutrical seemed to calm him down.

Oh that is too funny because my "Diva" is the same way she just sees the tube and she goes crazy she was a hypoglycemic baby too she now weighs 2 .8 lbs. and she will be 1 tomorrow.....I like that Doggie crack!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just brought home my baby yesterday.

I have been giving her nutrical but I am afraid it will ruin her appetite, not that I have even seen anything resembling an appetite so far. I have noticed that it does pep up her energy.

if your baby is eating well there is no need to give the Nutracal unless you see signs of hypoglycemia.. if you give it to them daily and they don't need it, it can possibly make them go into diabetes because it gets the glucose levels very unstable. keep it on hand for those times when she might get sick and stop eating and things like that. Also, i give only a small amount. just the tip of my index finger. i am well aware that others do it different but as a breeder, that is my recommendation and also that of other breeders on the board. you have to be careful with Nutracal.

Tatum's breeder gave us a tube of it when we picked Tatum up. We used it at times when she wouldn't eat well and especially after she would have a real hard playing spell - like running around in the yard for a long time. If we went somewhere like my daughter's softball games, I would take it in case she got lethargic from the heat or from not eating or drinking from the excitement. Definitely a good idea to have some on hand just in case. We called it Tatum's "go-go juice"! And she knew exactly what that was when we said it!

That is too funny!!! I give my baby Nutri Stat which is a hi calorie food supplement with omega acids for improved nutrition for dogs and cats, its also an energizer for finicky eaters, which is my nathan who is small and about 3 lbs...whenever he sees that yellow tube he goes nuts!!! All i have to do is open the cap and squeeze a little and he licks it up like a drug!!!!

lol it says it has an irresistable taste!!! which it obviously does!!! LOL
