| Teacup Yorkie Help Hello All, I have a question about my 'teacup' and I am in need of advice. A teacup yorkie was purchased for me this Chrstmas,a nd I have had no problem with her whatsoever. I was told that a teacup yorkie is not to get any bigger than 4 lbs, and that from 5-9lbs is a puppy in the 'toy' variety. I just went to the vet, and my dog weighed in at 5.5 lbs. I am wondering if I am due a refund due to the fact that my puppy is not a teacup at all, but a toy. I love her to death, regardless, but I am a bit miffed, as I did not receive the puppy that I thought I had. Please advise? Thank you! |

| Hello and Welcome to YT! I copied below from the FAQ's we have here. I hope this helps you out~ Is there such a thing as a “teacup” Yorkie? * No. Many yorkie breeder’s claim to have “teacup” Yorkie’s and justify charging more for such claims on their puppies. The Yorkie standard gives no preference for smaller dogs within the 7 pound weight limit. Extra care should be given to the more tiny Yorkies as some are more susceptible to hypoglycemia, physical injuries due to falls, etc. The Yorkshire Terrier standard as defined by the American Kennel Club (AKC) is between 4 to 7 pounds. * The desired size of the Yorkie is a personal choice. Families with small children might try to find a larger Yorkie, where as other’s might be in search for the so called “purse baby”. Smaller Yorkies may be more susceptible to disease and injuries due to their size. Also, many vets will charge more for working on smaller Yorkies because it is more difficult (and dangerous) because of the smaller size. * There is no such breed! The Yorkshire Terrier breed standard classifies Yorkies as up to 7 pounds. They may weigh from 4 to 7 pounds. If a breeder or pet store is selling a "teacup" or "mini", run away! They may be shady and misrepresenting the Yorkie. The tiny ones may be sold too early, perhaps just so they can call them "teacups" or a "mini". If you are set on a smaller Yorkie, ask your breeder when their next litter will be. There will be some "smaller" Yorkies in the litter from which to choose from. Most consider a respected breeder to be one that is AKC registered. While that does not always determine that they are to be trusted 100%, there are standards and qualifications that AKC registered breeders must pass. * There are small, full-grown Yorkies that may only weigh 2 pounds. But, it is very rare for Yorkies to be that small. If you have a Yorkie that is on the small side of the scale, you must be very careful with them, as they are definitely more "fragile" than standard sized ones and you must take extra precautions with them, such as making sure they don't fall from a high place or that they don't jump off of places. |

| You didn't receive a "teacup" because there is no such thing.

| Along with what was already posted, I can hear your frustration not because you don't love your dog, but because you feel you were duped. Its probably happened to several of us. I was sold a toy size Yorkie (would not get bigger then 7lbs), I ended up with an 11 pound Yorkie, he is fit and trim so not due to overweight, he is just larger. What can you do? All that a breeder can do is guestimate the size based on their line of breeding, what the parents weight, what other pups ended up etc. There are simply no guarantees but no, you will not receive any refund or be due one that I am aware of. | i am so sorry they got you on the "teacup". size is never a guarantee. you probably paid more for the "teacup" just because they advertised it that way. again, i am so sorry. just love that baby no matter what size she is

Please understand that there is no such thing as a "Teacup" Yorkie or "Toy" Yorkie. They are all a toy breed regardless of size. A Yorkie is a Yorkie. I am sorry you seem so dissapointed! According to the AKC a standard Yorkie is 7lbs and under! Your's is certainly within range at this time. Sounds like you may have purchased your pet from a pet store! If so they have no idea what the puppies weight would be. Your's is still so little why worry about it. Enjoy your little one. You would need to know the size of the parents, grandparents and line in order to know what your puppies weight would be and then there are always exceptions to the rule. | |

| I'm sorry you feel duped I think many of us "toy breed" lovers bought a Yorkie/Maltese/Chihuahua hoping he or she would stay small. My Sammie is 5 months and just under 3 pounds....but in one year, he may grow to be 10 pounds. Who knows??!?! All I can go by is his parents....mom 6 pounds, dad 3 pounds. That is probably your best bet. Also, when people buy from a breeder, ask to see the parents so you can see coloring, body style, etc. It's a shame many people use the teacup term to appeal to the buyer and sky rocket the price. Talk to the person you bought your puppy from because there are many people who DO GAURENTEE THE SIZE!!! Believe it not, I know several people who have been breeding since early 1980s ....and they have quality smaller Yorkies that through many years (avoiding inbreeding) have generations and generations of proof that their puppies will be small Good luck |

LOL.. well to answer your question without the lecture about sizes NO.. unless you got it in writing you really have no standing . Of course if she emailed you and you saved the email and in the email she guaranteed ,you might have a leg to stand on. Most of the time a breeder who promises teacups will use words like "IN THEIR OPINION " or "SHOULD" which leaves them a loophole

| I'm so sorry you were dupped....Unsuspecting families wanting a wee one can be lured in by those that advertise "Teacups, micro-minis and Pocket Rockets But, be thankful that the puppy didn't remain small. Small ones even though they may be healthy require extra care, no matter how you look at it. Prone to accidents, etc. There is no minimum size listed in the standard, just not to exceed 7 pounds..... Your baby at 5.5 pounds is still relatively a little dog.

Sorry that you got taken by the "teacup" ... My breeder wouldn't even guarantee a weight. I did get to see both parents, and I kinda had an idea, although I know that means nothing... but, I agree, both of my yorkies are 5 lbs, and they are tiny. When I bought Zoey the breeder had 2 1/2 lb male yorkie, and you should have seen it! It was so tiny, I would have broke him. My bf could put his pinky and his middle finger around the tiny thing. I can't believe they used him to breed. I used to want a so called "teacup" too, until I see that little one. If you ever got tangled up with him (which seems to happen a lot around here sometimes!) and stepped on him, I think you would break him. Just be happy that you have a healthy baby, but I seen that you love her just the same, and thats all that matters!
