| I Am Sooo M A D Saturday my husband and I saw a Yorkie locked in a car with the windows barely cracked in a store parking lot, and no yorkie parent anywhere around. The temp was in the 80's, the sun was out and it was getting warm. The yorkie was panting and getting hot. I went inside the department store with vehicle descrip and lic # and asked them to page the car owner. When the lady came outside she was very indignant that we would mess into her business about her dog. I asked her if she would let me have to dog if she didn't care anymore about it than to kill it in a hot car. She refused to give me the dog. She argued with us that she was only going to be in there a few more minutes and she didn't want to open the windows and have her dog stolen. I offered to stand by her car and watch her dog if she would open the windows. She refused and left in a huff. Sunday we went to a hardware store and guess what... in a car parked right in front of us was a little Yorkie alone in a car. Today it was cooler/overcast and the back windows were down a few inches. The dog looked ok because there was a breeze blowing thru. Just for my future reference, who would you call to report this type of thing when an animal is in danger? Will the police break into someone's car to save a dog??? I wonder how many other dogs were left sitting in hot cars while "parents" were shopping this weekend. I wish some people would think about what they are doing to their precious little babies. I believe that would be an agonizing way to die.

| That sucks! What is wrong with people?? There have been so many known reports of animals and BABIES dying in cars like that.....there is no excuse. Yes, the police will rescue them! Animal control division might make it there quicker, since regular cops may be on more priorty calls....I'm not sure. Don't all states have a law about that or only some?? If they break the law they will also get cited and well, I honestly don't know all the consequences..... I'm glad you told the store to page that woman!

| Is she was just going in for a few minutes, then why not leave the baby at home where she would be safe. If I know I am going somewhere where Holly is not allowed, I leave her home. It's not worth something bad happening.

No Longer a Member | I did report it to the police one time. The cop was working security in the lumber store and he told me that is all the owners are required to do is crack the windows. There was nothing he could do. Years ago my then husband actually busted out osomeone's window to rescure a big dog that was dying in someone's truck there were no windows cracked. Afterward he called the police. I would like to add to this thread what about the good ol' boys that feel the need to let their dogs ride around in the back of their truck, and even on the top of their tool boxes. Stop me now, I'm getting started. |

| i dont think its right to leave a pet in a vehicle at all for so many reasons, if you arent taking them inside, leave them at home. but if someone confronted me about it, i would walk away from them and if they asked to stand near my vehicle, if i lowered the windows i wouldnt trust them...dogs are stolen everyday, expecially yorkies. besides she might have needed to stop on the way home and couldnt bring the dog in, and was trying to rush, and all that did was slow her down, to getting back outside. i think thats its wondeful to be concerned about other pets but some people to do take it a little far |

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | That's so sad. I don't think people really know how truly fast a car can heat up ...I'd probably leave a note on their windshield in mild weather - call the cops in hot weather...it only takes a few minutes for the temps to soar and kill a dog in the summer heat |

i'm with you. i feel its your right to get mad but to confront someone is really stepping over the line. its kind of like it is with your children. you wouldn't want a complete stranger coming up to you and telling you how to raise your kids. i know i don't. its the same thing. you have to respect other folks and give them that benefit of the doubt. i mean maybe you don't really know the situation. if that had been me i'm sorry but you would have gotten cursed out! sorry but thats me. i would have been to afraid of what that person would have said!!! and depending what time of the day it was saturday was a beautiful day here in STL, it wasn't THAT hot. and yes i know inside a car is different. but it really wasn't that bad.

It's a Yorkie Thing Donating Member | When I'm out with Duke I only shop at Pet friendly stores. We have several in our area that will let them in. Other wise I always leave him home. I can't believe someone thinks thats ok to leave them in the car.

| I did confront someone once and will never do it again. If I see a dog/ kid in a car and it is to hot out I will dial 911 and wait for them to come. It can heat up alot in a car even when the temp is in the 60s and the sun is out , If the windows are up. |

| I know that here the police would break the window if they had to. People are so stupid. How would they like to sit in a hot car w/out the windows open. Maybe they should try it out and see how freakin hot the car can get. |

| One day when Me & my bf was going to the mall, we saw a poodle in a car with the back window up. He could've easily gotten stolen, or jumped out of the car. I felt bad so i went buy a bottle of water and a plastic bowl. I gave him some water and a treat. Boy he ws sooo excited! Then we told mall secuirty and I guess they went find the owner. People are sooo stupid! Don't get a dog if you don't give a crap about them. |

I was in a different store shopping while my husband waited outside. He saw the yorkie locked in the car for 30 min. while he was waiting for me. He doesn't know how much longer it was in the car before he saw it but it was already in a very stressed state, pacing and panting for air. There was no water for the dog to drink in there and there were other people besides my husband standing around the car concerned about the dog when I came out of the store. When I said I was going in all the stores until I found the owner, the other people left because it was being taken care of. When the lady came out she said she was in the dressing room trying on clothes. I think she forgot about the dog. If it had been me I would have been grateful that someone saw my dog and called me outside. We are all human and could have been distracted when trying on clothes and forgot we left the dog in the car. The dog was clearly in distress. My husband was talking to the dog thru the car window to try to calm it down. The car windows were cracked about 1/4 inch, not enough to let air in a hot car. The temp was in the 80's. I didn't really expect the person to let me watch her dog while she shopped. But she started heading back into the store without even opening the car to give the dog some fresh air. She said she wasn't finished trying on clothes. I was trying to think of anything I could to get her to look after her dog. It worked, she got in the car in a huff and left. If she would have gone back in the store I probably would have called the police to hopefully rescue the dog. I couldn't in good conscience walk away from that scene and leave the dog to convulse and/or die. That car was heating up fast in the hot sun. If I ever come upon this situation again, I will not go looking for the owner, I will call the police or animal welfare people. Maybe that was a mistake. My thought was to save the owner from that kind of scene and possibly a broken car window and also to get relief for the dog as soon as possible. If that was your dog, what would you have liked me to do? I am asking because it was sort of a panic situation for me and I acted on impulse. What I did may not have been the best thing but I would like to hear what you would have liked someone to do if it had been your dog. My husband didn't confront her, he just told her he was worried about her dog in the hot car. She went off on him for even saying it. I don't care how mad and upset she was, I wasn't going to stand there and watch that little dog die in that car.
