| yorkie with 3 legs Hello I am a new member to this group and this is my first post to this site My Yorkie AllyOops is having surgery in the morning to amputate her right front leg She broke her leg above the elbow in Feb and the vet set it and she wore a cast for 6 weeks when the cast was removed the break did not heal so the next thing he tried was doing surgery and placing pins in her legs she has had this on her leg for 7 weeks today her leg was checked and her leg has not healed does anyone have a 3 legged yorkie how well are they doing I feel so bad for her she is not quite 5 years old The vet said this is the right choice for her as she is at the risk of bone infection and may also have nerve damage Thanks Samantha |

| Sorry, I can't answer your question about amputation but I guess if the vet advises it, then it's the right thing to do. I have heard of dogs that do very well with just three legs though. Good Luck and be sure to keep us posted on your gals recovery!

| I don't have any advice either. Just wanted to say sorry that she has to go through this. I am sure she will adjust quickly. What happens after surgery, does he keep her sedated for awhile till its safe for her to get up or what?

| I am so sorry this happend! It sounds like your vet has done everything possible though and that the amputation is the last resort. Have you done a search over at dogster to ask any of the members that have dogs with three legs and how they adjust? |

| I wish I could help but I just wanted to tell you I hope everything goes ok. I dont know about you but if it happened to my baby I would be heart broken, but in the end I think the incident would only make me love him more.

| Welcome to you and Allyoops (what a cute name! are you a basketball fan?) I am so sorry for what you both have been through. I can't remember what show it was on but I saw a two legged dog on TV playing fetch and wagging it's tail and being all happy. The owners said even having only 2 legs did not slow the dog down.

| Samantha and AllyOops welcome to YT. Im so sorry that your baby needs to have her leg amputated. I dont have any info on this matter but i wanted to tell you that will have you both in my prayers for everything to work out for Ally. Did you got a second opinion? It seems your vet tried everything, so I guess he knows what is best. Good luck. Please keep us posted. |

| I used to work for the animal shelter and there were a few dogs that i came across that had only 3 legs. Once the dog adjusts to only having 3 legs she will do just fine. Most of them can keep up to the 4 legged dogs without a problem over time. I am sooo sorry for what you have had to go through though. I really do think you made the right choice though because a bone infection can be devistating to you and the dog. |

| Welcome to you and Allyoops. I bet after she heals Allyoops will be around in no time on 3 legs...It's amazing how these animals learn to adjust. Please keep us posted on how she is doing and hugs to her from Schatzie.

| legs Hi and welcome.. Dogs do very well with 3 legs. I know several personnally and they have no clue there is anything not perfect with their bodies. My Clemmie's leg took 5 months to heal from a very bad break. She had surgery and pins put in also. Each month I took her for an xray..month 1 through 3 there was only minimal healing, month 4 it started to improve, month 5 it was healed..a broken bone that has mended is stronger then one that was never broken. The cast never bothered Clemmie..in fact my vet said he has one Yorkie in a walking cast for 2 yrs, but it healed slowly. My vets said...all bones heal given enough time..you check them regular for any problems and wait it out...get Sea Kelp daily. Good luck to you. Last edited by YorkieRose; 05-27-2005 at 05:05 AM. |

| My sister has a toy poodle named troubles who is getting on in age and she has aurthoritis (i know I spelled that wrong) and even though she has all four legs, she only uses the front TWO! She walks on the front two legs and her hips and back legs are up in the air cause she can't use them. She is still fiesty and spunky and gets along great! She even tries to run away all the time because my sister also has a scottish terrier and troubles hates him I'm really sorry you have to go through that but I think she will be just fine. It will be sad for you to see but after you both adjust it will just seem normal for both of you. Best wishes

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | Oh wow ! I'm so sorry about your baby's leg !! I don't personally know anyone who's gone thru this but I know many people worldwide and animals can do just fine minus a leg.... I know it's going to break your heart... but in time I bet AllyOpps (love her name) does just fine and you'll have a beautiful friend for a long time ... Good luck to you and AllyOoops and PLEASE let everyone know how the surgery is going - I for one will be keeping you in my thoughts today - bless her heart - you hang in there OK ? |
