tator tots...

My Baby loves tator tots and i was wondering if they are really bad for him and definately should not eat them. he is sitting here crying for them right now. and i'm afraid of dog food right now so i was thinging couldnt be any worse. what do you all think?

No joke about the dog food scare! Who knows but I would imagine it can't be healthy..I would worry about the "bathroom issues" the grease could cause...that would be no fun to clean...but I am sure the little one would be one happy pup if you dropped a few in the Southern direction...hehe you wouldn't have time to pick them up and throw them away thats for sure!

Well the bathroom issues is a big concern, but usually he has extremely dry stools so it might help him out with that one...lol

lol..that is nasty but we could care less what they do..I love my little man and he farts and burps and does all kinds of things I would generally run from if it were my boyfriend...guess it's an unconditional mommy love!!!

I think those tater tots are very high in fat, and I do believe that foods high in fat are a big NO NO for these little guys because of pancreatitis which is very dangerous. But Im not positive on this so maybe someone else could give you better imput.

My two cents worth -- a 3 oz serving of Tater tots only has a total of 7 grams of fat -- that is like half of what a boiled egg has -- and you won't be feeding him a whole human-sized serving, right? Now this is if you are baking them and not deep frying them where they can soak up a lot of grease. So, one or two is probably not going to hurt ..... except..... that the pup just learned he could cry and make you give him what he wants. He may be less likely to eat his dog food after that. But if you feel comfortable using it as an occasional treat, I doubt it will hurt anything. We occasionally let ours get a tidbit of human food. Nothing too greasy, fatty, or spicy. But we do have a rule (occasionally broken by DH and DS) that if they whine at the table, they do not get it.

I usually dont give him food from the table,but i have gave him some of the white meat from chicken before. when he was sick and not eating much. i think this is where he started begging for food. i did not give him the tator tot at that time but i did sneak one in his bowl later..lol

He eats his puppy food very good most of the time,but somedays he will not eat no matter what i do to it.

I usually will give him greens beans or cheerios for a snack

I would be careful with table foods..especially foods that are high in fat. Like the poster said...you REALLY don't want your little one to end up with pancreatitis...this is very painful for the dog not to mention very costly for you. And with their tiny bellies they fill up fast...you really wouldn't want him filling up on food that really isn't that good for him.

the fat content and panreatitis would be a big concern, yorkies are a breed that has problems with this.

They also contain onion powder and my vet said no onions so I don't know if powder poses a problem. But all in all I think I'd pass, I don't buy they either to greasey

Potatoes Solanum alkaloids can be found in green sprouts and green potato skins, which occurs when the tubers are exposed to sunlight during growth or after harvest. The relatively rare occurrence of actual poisoning is due to several factors: solanine is poorly absorbed; it is mostly hydrolyzed into less toxic solanidinel; and the metabolites are quickly eliminated. Cooked, mashed potatoes are fine for dogs, actually quite nutritious and digestible.
Just something I found on the web. Not sure on Tator tots.

The only reason I would say no (since I don't know much about the nutritional value of people food for dogs) is because of the begging issue. Once you start feeding your dog from your plate, the begging is only going to get worse. I've told this story before but..... when Tatum was about a year old we had a birthday dinner for my husband and my dad let Tatum taste a little bit of cherry pie filling from his finger. You know that toot would beg from my dad (and ONLY from him) every time he came over after that. The rest of the family are on strict orders to never feed Tatum people food because of this issue and we finally broke Tatum of the habit with my dad.

I know there are people that feed their dogs home-cooked food but I'll stick with a nutritious dog food with Tatum. If you do decide to cook for your dog, be sure to get all the info you can about it - there are many people on here that can steer you in the right direction.
