List unsafe chew/toys that are sold - YorkieTalk.com Forums

When Buddy got very sick 2yrs ago Nylabone was a possible suspect!
Do you have any idea how many unsafe toys and chews are sold in
our pet stores on a daily basis

We have listed toxic foods in the
past how about chews and toys? We could help each other if you
have had a bad experience with either of these.
I'll start:
Nylabone (not the ingested kind):
The label states on the back in small print/Small particals, the size
of a grain of rice, may come off but "SHOULD PASS THROUGH".
What is dosen't tell you is that these small plastic particals are very
sharp and can get prick the stomach lining and causing it to bleed and build up in the intestines doing the same thing.
It would be like us swollowing a pin! Unfortunately Buddy had
them in all colors and styles. I never read the back of the label.
I assumed they were safe because they were being sold!

Honestly (and please don't jump on me this is just my experience) I don't think any toy is 100% safe. I think even the safest toy left with your baby unsupervised could pose as dangerous as well. For instance those expensive and supposedly indestructible chew toys; are not. My girl is a heavy chewer and broke of a small piece (that had I not been around) would have posed as a choking hazard.

I think any toy or any chew toy could pose a health problem for those guys who do some serious chewing, and is the one reason I am always saying "buy femur bones", and knuckle bones are great too. I cut off the excess meat and take out the marrow. I actually cook those first, since they can't splinter them anyway.

Watch out for Bully Sticks too. Mattie really went to town on one and got it down quicker than we were expecting and when my husband went to get it from him -- he swallowed it. It was about 2" long. And then he let out a cry. Scared me to death. We watched him all night and lucky he passed it the next afternoon. Right now we are both afraid to let him have any. They just don't last very long.

Lucy started gagging last night after chewing on a bully stick. She didn't swallow it. I bought one that was about 12" long because I was afraid of her choking but then she started swallowing every couple seconds and kind of coughing a gagging like a dog pulling on a neck collar. Any, finally she gave one good cough and she must have gotten it up although I didn't see anything. I didn't think bully sticks would come apart. I don't know what it was.

I know that most of the toys that I buy for my babies I have to be very very careful about....my Bella is an UNBELIEVABLE chewer! I have to watch EVERYTHING that I give her....Louie is more of a mellow chewer. Just tonight though I was making ribs for dinner and was wondering if I could give them the bone from that to naw on (after stripping it completely of all the meat of course).....but the bones seem so SOLID and hard to even knick with a knife, so I thought it would be safe...but wanted to ask first. Does anyone else give their babies these.

I do not think you should. I gave them to my Border Collie in the past and they seem to splinter!

Well I just posted about this yesterday after taking our sick puppy to the vet!
We learned the rope knot toys that have strings on the ends or any toy with strings. Fleece toys because they chew them into small bits and swallow them.
The stuffing out of stuffed animals.
After a return visit to the vet today, it's not just toys that can make these little ones sick. Tissue paper, napkins, fuzz, hair, etc.. are all threatening for them.
Our vet said for larger dogs it's not a problem because they can pass it, but as small as Yorkies are, all these things can get lodged and build up and cause complications.

interesting thread. I too am looking for something for Ahia. she manages to destroy all the toys. and eats everything. nothing so far has held up for her.
