| Afraid to Clip His Nails.. Way too Long. Harleys nails have slowing grown longer and longer and I'm too afraid to clip them because I don't know where the quick is. And besides me being worried, he's a total baby now. Even if I don't hit the quick he yelps like he's dying the second I clip down on the nail and the sound makes my heart stop. I walk him on contrete with a harness so he can pull as hard as he likes and wear them down but I think he's to the point where that won't help much. He clicks when he walks and I hate that, I feel like I'm a bad mom. I hope to get him a dental soon and am wondering if it would be ok to ask my vet to clip back his nails even past the quick while he's under so he won't feel it. Is this ok? And if they do it will he's nails be sore afterwards? I just figured it would be the best route to go ahead and clip them back as far as possible to I can start all over and just start clipping them bi-weekly. Any input?

| I am scared also. I have a Maltese, not a Yorkie yet I dont send mine to a groomer anymore I do it myself, but I can't cut the nails. So I go to PetSmart and they do it there for six bucks..Maybe you can try that.. Good Luck, Bianca |

| What you are describing is a sugical cut..where they cut the nails real short..I am looking to do the same thing with Ralph when he gets his teeth cleaned..Even if they bleed they stop right away..that what my vet told me..

| nails It is best to do them twice monthly..just a bit..then the quick will recede..you see if they are allowed to grow long, the quick gets longer also...and you can't get them short enough without bleeding. Do one at a time and wait to see if it bleeds, then do another. |

| I groomed a Lhasa recently that had been to the vet for teeth cleaning a few days before. When I went to clip her nails I noticed that they were cut way back. I mean really short and obviously quicked (bled). It has only been a few days and she didn't appear to be sore at all. It you are going to have your dog sedated for the teeth anyway, I would go ahead and get the nails done at the same time. Afterwards the quick will recede back a bit more and you should be able to keep them short in the future.

| Your post reminded me of the fact that I had yet to try to cut Tetley's nails! So with clippers in hand I just attempted this very scary feat...and thank god he didn't hardly notice! Hubby kept him busy with cheerios and I went to work. Phew! Just cut the tiniest bit off the end but at least no blood. I'll try again next week and go a bit further. I don't want to hurt him so we'll take it slow. He still screams like I'm killing him when I brush him though. |

| I have decided to go ahead and have them cut back when they do his dental. Now all that's left is to get my butt and gear and get his dental scheduled! hehe

| nails Why not go to a groomer..simply ask for the nails to be cut while you are waiting...I did that dozens of times a month.. When the nails are neglected, the toes will splay..and it is uncomfortable...and they can break off, causing more pain, bleeding. They can get caught in bedding, fabric and rip out the entire nail, very painful... Now, ladies if you are going to own a dog, you are going to have to learn to clip them yourself or make a regular visit to a groomer or vet...I love dogs and take their side always!!!! |

The reason I am going to have it done at the vet while he's getting his dental is because they are going to have to actually cut the nail all the way back. I love dogs too, they're my job and my life and I definately don't think it's very kind to have a dogs nails actually cut back while they're awake at a groomer. The last time I even tried to clip his nails even just a little I caught the quick (because it's too far grown out) and he screamed and bled. I'm going to have them cut back while he's under so he won't feel it and from then on once the quick has started to receed (sp) I'm going to start clipping them back once a month like I was advised I have 5 other dogs besides Harley and I keep all their nails trimmed myself. (oh yea 2 cats and 2 ferrets included hehe) I don't have a problem with them because they're not big babies like Harley lol and they are also bigger dogs. For example, Lady and Clovis are both in the 45-65 lbs range so their nails pretty much stay short because their normal weight keeps them trimmed back. Zeus lets me clip his with not much argument, TA only needs trims few and far between because she goes to the groomer regularly and Forest just wears his down on his owns seeing as he spends hours everyday just ripping and tearing around outside on the patio. lol I wasn't really sure what you meant by "I love dogs and take their side always" ?

Senior Yorkie Talker | I'm glad this post is up because i'm scared to clip Zoey's nails too! I've only clipped one of her nails and she acted like it was the end of the world. They are extremely lonnnng. I'll probably take her to PetsMart and have them do it.

| I have Jaden and Jewelina's nails trimmed once every two weeks at the latest by my vet. If they go to their vet or groomer in between them I have them trimmed then as well. I find it is best to keep them quite short, then you only have to nip the slightest bit off and it doesn't bother the dog at all. I tried once to do it myself but then I didn't want to hurt either of them or get a bleeder so I decided to let my vet or personal groomer do it for them. It's around 7-10 bucks and pays for my ease of mind. |
