| Teacup yorkies Hello - I'm new here! My name's Carolyn and I've been enjoying looking at all your lovely pictures! I am a big fan of yorkies and hope to own one very soon! I am doing all the research I can now so I can get myself a healthy, happy puppy. I read online that if we hear or see a breeder who refers to their puppies as 'teacusp' that they are bad and that we should not go to them. I'm concerned because the only few breeders in california call their puppies teacups! They also claim to home-raise their puppies, give them the best care etc. etc. and they seem like nice people. How did you guys get your puppies? Do you have a specific breeder you can recommend? HOw did you find him/her? Any advice and information would be extremely helpful to me Thank you very much! |

| There are no such things as "Teacup" Yorkie's. A yorkie is a yorkie. A true breeder of this breed will try it's best to breed to standard 7lbs and under. The term teacup comes from breeding these little ones down to very tiny sizes which only put a higher price tag on the pup and can also cause real health issues. Anyone that advertises Teacup's stay away from. They are hoping you know nothing and only want to reach into your wallet. Please do a search on YT. There are several breeders and members who have pups. You'll be certain to get a healthy one. Good luck with your search. Oh, welcome to YT. Carol & Buddy |

| Post a general location and I am sure there will be a YT member that can refer you to a reputable breeder. I don't get bent out of shape over the term teacup. Sure it is incorrect and can mean a different size to different people -- but is is just a term. More important for me is to see some of the pups that came from the breeder, see the parents, see the place where the parents are kept, see how they interact with the owner, get personal references. A lot of people are used to hearing the term teacup meaning the smallest of different breeds. It is an AKC designation for some breeds. So, I do not necessarily think because a person uses the term to convey the idea they have smaller examples of the breed, they are evil people. Now if they breed a tiny female, putting her life at risk just to try for tiny pups that they can inflate the price on -- well that is another story. I think most breeders that have really researched and read the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America site will refrain from the "teacup" term. So, it is usually thought that the ones using "teacup" in their advertising are either uneducated or just out for the money. Maybe so.... but like I said, it is just a red flag for me and I wouldn't jump to a conclusion without getting the rest of my answers. It also depends on what you plan for the puppy -- pet, show, breeding? If a pet only, you might take a look. If wanting to show/breed, then you have to look for a more educated breeder.

| My issue with the teacup term is that it seems like it USUALLY means one of two things are going on: ///either the breeder is trying to cash in on the teacup craze by charging outrageous bucks for dogs that really don't end up being any smaller than average...or.... ///....the breeder IS specifically trying to breed for the smaller sizes, and produces them regularly to call themselves a "teacup" breeder. You might not think anything sounds wrong with that second scenario, HOWEVER....it's the tiny yorkies that come out of that kind of breeding program that DO often end up having many health issues. Either way, I would just personally AVOID a breeder whose focus is on SIZE. There are so many more important issues! I'm sure you can find a great breeder in California! Just keep asking around here! Good luck!

| I purchased a very pretty and healthy yorkie from a nice breeder here in N. Cal. If you are interested, PM me. I can send you to my breeder!!! She doesn't sell "Teacup", but my Momiji is pretty small!!! (only 2.15 lb at 5 1/2 month!! She didn't guarantee the size of the yorkie. She said most likely she will be smaller since the parents are pretty small.) Kana & Momiji |

| tiny's I agree, I happen to have bred a very tiny little guy, (not on purpose by the way) probably could have gotten a fortune for him by advertising him as a "teacup". But I was afraid to sell him due to some sugar issues he was having, and wouldn't want him to die or somebody losing a pet that they love, so I kept him and nursed him every hour on the hour 24/7 for a looonnnngggg time. He is now almost 6 months and weighs almost 2 lbs, (after eating he actually weighs 2 lbs. sometimes ) so I guess what I'm saying is if you do buy a tiny, be informed cause you may wind up having some issues!

| Hey. I'm also new to YT. I bought my 1st yorkie 31/2 yrs. ago from someone local. I now have 3 to love. I also researched for months trying to find out all I could. I heard alot of negatives about breeders breeding inferior litters. My babies are probably not show quality & to some may even appear inferior. But they're my babies & are perfect to me. They are healthy, happy, & have great dispositions. So go on out there, follow your instincts, & you'll find your furbaby to love. Unless you're wanting to show, or breed fancy bloodlines, don't worry about scouring the country side searching for the perfect specimin. I would much rather buy a pup from someone close by, that I can visit regularly, than send money across country & take a chance on being scammed. Good luck. |
