"holding it" question

I just posted on the training site (called ready for crate training), but thought i'd try here too as i'm desperate.
At what age did u guys typically start crate training when you were gone?
Is it a bad idea to put some newspaper in the crate while you are gone?
my little stinker has managed to escape every place i put her -gates, xpens(or tear things apart like walls, woodwork etc) so I imagine I'll be forced to start kenneling her earlier than you are supposed to-to protect her -from herself. (she is 3 1/2 mo's)

just curious on your thoughts out there.... I didnt have this much trouble w/my first yorkie-so I'm clueless and I dont have a neighbor closeby that can check on her during the day (we are typically gone for 7 to 8 hours each day).

Ok ? She escapes?? Does she jump out of the Xpen? I guess I'm lucky, Riley is not a jumper. While we're away, Riley stays in her Xpen in the middle of my kitchen (I had her against the wall but she was chewing on the baseboard). She usually holds it until someone gets home, but sometimes she pees on the tile (no big problem there). Riley uses the carrier only to sleep in at night.
I believe they make covers (tops) for the Xpens. Maybe you can try that. I don't think you're suppposed to put newspaper in the crates. Good luck!

I think 7-8 hours is too long to crate a dog. Maybe you could try cleaning a space like the bathroom for her. You could put everything that she needs in there: potty pads, food, water, toys... Just please don't crate her all day.

I have 4 Yorkies all in the year, year 1/2 range. It has been difficult to train them as they see others going in places that they shouldn't. They have their own room 10x10 in the kitchen along with 2 bird cages. I put down those pee pads that are washable and for the most part, they will go on them. When i'm at home, I let them out on the porch (secured) to get fresh air and to spend a little time outside. I have found that since I had them all spayed/neutered my boys won't go as often.

yeah i'm beginning to think this dog is not for me.
sad, but i already tried the bathroom, she ate the toilet paper holder on the wall, the floorboards and the cabinets, I just can't have this right now. The only SAFE place for her is in a kennel. and if she can't stay in the kennel for 8 hours, then she is going to get hurt either eating wood or chewing cords that are into the carpet, so i cant just remove them-she eats carpet, linoleum, even walls-
i dont get it-i think she must have a nervous tick.

Get her a bigger wire crate. She will have a little room to move and for a potty pad. She also will not be able to get out.

Sorry she is driving you so crazy! Hopefully she will get better with time.

Thats what I would do too. The chewing can drive you crazy but once they get older they are alot better about not doing it

yea this sounds good to me too. i have a bigger crate for harley to sleep in at nite with 1 side having litter box with pad in it and the other side is a bed and toys. you could also try the clear roll on deodorant for things that she chews on. i hear that works well.

I started crate training Buddy immediately when I brought him home at 14 1/2 wks. I had no other choice, he had to learn to be potty trained ASAP.
I put him in the crate at 8:00 am and came home at lunch time to take him out to do his thing. 13mi each way. Back into the create until 5:30 when I came home at night and right out. Then out again around 7:30 and again at 10:00 and back into the crate until 6:00am. I played with him until 10:00. He never went in the crate except once and he had the diahrea then.
After 6wks of doing this I stopped going home at lunch time. He was in the crate all day from 8am - 5:30pm. He held it all day. I felt bad because of the amount of time in the create but it was large and he had lots of room.
I had no problem. He was fully trained around 5mos.
Today he has full run of the condo and has never had an accident.

sounds like my 1st yorkie... I just need a nanny to come and let her out during the day IF THE SNOW WOULD STOP!!!
yeah, I know I can do it, but it is just so discouraging knowing that it's one challenge after another and I'm almost afraid to walk in the kitchen-wondering what did she do now

thanks for all your ideas. too bad bathrooms have floorboards and wood cabinets, that wouldve been a perfect little room for miss tinky.

I have had a few Yorkies through the years. Most of them have not been perfect at potty training. Even most people in my Yorkie meetup group have accidents and do not trust them 100%. I limit the area in the kitchen and family room and have the most success. My 3 year old Yorkie can not wait longer than 4 hours without going. As a nurse, it is not healthy to hold it a long time for any living thing.

Get an X-pen and set it up with a pee pad and food water and toys. They also need to be able to move and exercise when you are at work all day. Get the tallest x-pen or get a roof for it. I would not let your puppy be in a crate all day. Yorkies are not easy and do take training and lots of patience. Just the other day I came home from a long day and work. My two pups had crap all over the x-pen and themselves. It took an hour and half for me to clean, brush them and eveything. Ughh! It does not happen too often but it is work sometimes. My yorkie is a climber, so I end up using a piece of plywood in the entrance of the kitchen... he can't jump this one! He has everything he needs there, water, food, toys, bed, pad. He always pees and poops when I'm gone, so I can't imagine crating him and having him holding it for 8 hours. Plus, I think, in general, yorkies shouldn't be crated for more than 4 hours.
