| Home & Garden Show in OK Would Not Allow Dogs I would love to hear everyone's thoughts. My husband and I have been going for years to the Home and Garden Show in Oklahoma. We have taken our Yorkies with us in the past. Our girls are small (2.5 lbs & 3.5 lbs). Both are carried and their paws never touch the floor. We were told yesterday that they would not be allowed into the exhibits. We would never leave our girls in the car, so it meant driving all the way back home. I have written a letter that I want to send to the Home and Garden Show folks and my husband thinks it is a waste of time. In the letter I wrote that I could make the same remarks about messes, noises, etc. that kids create (& we have 4 now grown kids) and that there are many liability issues that do not involve pets. I even told them that I could have smuggled both girls into the show in an enclosed doggie purse or in their enclosed stroller. Do you all agree with my husband. Should I just drop the issue or should I send the email? We have lots of places here in Oklahoma that we can take our dogs and I just don't know why it is an issue some places, but not everywhere. |

| If it makes you feel happier, write the email! I don't see anything wrong in expressing your feelings Don't have to tell your husband everything Maybe he is happier not knowing it

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Write it. They say for every letter an organization receives, it's really like 1000 or more letters because most people don't take the time to write. I can understand these places not wanting a dog walking around on a leash, but in a carrier, what is the problem with that? I think dog owners have a lot more clout then we use.

| It's frustrating not to be able to take your dog places. I don't understand what harm a couple of small dogs could do. I have heard the excuse "some people have allergies", but they have to allow service dogs. That doesn't make sense. What do people with allergies when there are service dogs in a business? I think the main problem, if they allowed small dogs, then people with big dogs would want the same treatment. Big dogs on leashes could be a problem( making messes or coming into contact with people who are afraid or don't like dogs). And face it, some people have no judgment. They'd bring dangerous dogs just to make themselves look tough, and sooner or later, someone could get hurt. So I guess, businesses just make a blanket policy on "no dogs" and refuse to make allowances to avoid conflicts. I personally wish there was a law for small dogs, that if they were vet-certified healthy and immunized and confined to a purse, carrier or arms, they could go anywhere anytime. Maybe I should run for office. LOL. |

| There are all sorts of reasons why dogs aren't allowed into certain places and we as dog owners have to respect that. I strongly disagree with posts I read here about people sneeking their pets into places they know they aren't welcome ( I know that wasn't the case in this post as they brought their dogs there before w/out incident). They are animals after all...no matter how hard we try to make them into our babies (I'm guilty) or place human emotions on them and I think it's good to be reminded of that every once in a while. |

| Its true but it doesn't hurt to write and then maybe they would allow it. Fine if they don't but at least we tried.

| Write the letter. It will make you feel better. My dog likes to stay home and guard the house..lol.., she doesn't like car rides and is wreck by the time we get there. Unless we are going away for the weekend we leave her at home. My girlfriends and I drove up to Apple Hill in California in October (it is a huge craft fair involving several orchards with Apples and pumpkins) Anyway a large majority of the tourists had their dogs with them. The smaller ones were in carriers, strollers, backpacks etc. And the larger ones on leashes. We went to several places that the larger dogs were getting into fights...pretty scary...so I can see where some places are starting to ban dogs, also owners didn't clean up the dog poop.... yuck...not everyone is responsible and unfortunately it ruins it for everyone else.

| Thanks to everyone who has responded. I learn so much from everyone on this forum! Even though I can say I would never leave anything behind for someone to clean up I know that there are others that would. I am going to go ahead and send the letter and just request that they consider allowing pets if they are in an enclosed carrier. In a million years, I would never have guessed that I could get so attached to these beautiful babies. I love the smiles that they put on people's faces when you have them out in public! Lexi and Cricket sure make my day and I guess I just want to share it! Again, thanks everyone for taking time to write!!! |

| I would write the letter, I think it will make you feel better. I agree with Michelle, I think sometimes bigger dogs can be a problem so they have to ban all of them, and also a lot of the people I see with big dogs refuse to clean up after them. It hurts all of us. We were asked to leave an outdoor craft festival too. It was a dinky little town with about 10 tents. We went every year with our dogs and all was fine. Then last summer we were asked to leave because our dog barked at a big dog that charged her. The people with the big dog were not asked to leave. We saw tons of big dogs that were walking around and no one made them leave. We figured that they probably live there and we were spotted as "outsiders". We drove an hour to get there and had to leave as soon as we got there. The cops told us we could stay if we left the dogs in the car. It was in the high 80's and I told him "no way, we are leaving". We decided to not go back there again and find someplace where we are welcome with our babies.

The cops told you to leave 2 small dogs in the car in 80 degree weather...oh my gosh...here the cops write tickets to the owners and have even broken car windows to rescue dogs locked in cars in high temps...animal control will come and take your dog away from you. In the summertime alot of stores have signs posted in the windows about leaving pets in cars/trucks. You are right, there are others places that will welcome your business with your little dogs in tow...lol...

| Aww, I'm sorry to hear that! I have been working an exhibitor's booth all weekend at our home expo show here in Charleston, and one family came by with a 11 week old yorkie pup that totally made my day! So, my advice is, next year, come to the Charleston one instead and bring your yorkie to visit me. LOL.
