| ![]() Hi everyone! ![]() I currently have a Cairn Terrier. He'll be 3 in May and his name is Braxton. This is my 3rd Carin and he's been the best one yet. I figured after Braxton departed this world, my next one would be a Yorkie but I just sense that he's longing for a K-9 companion. So I decided - why wait for him to go? Cairns are wonderful dogs but I've fallen in love with the little angel faces of the Yorkie. Hopefully I'll be a Yorkie Mama toward the end of May or beginning of June! If anyone has any tips for introducing a new puppy to an older dog, please let me know! I've got a few months to prepare and get our home ready to welcome a new little princess into our lives so any thing you think I need to know - please feel free! Thanks for welcoming me to the community Yorkie3! ![]()

| ![]() Hi Steph. I got my second Yorkie when my Newman was seven years old. I don't really have any advice except to go slow when introducing them. Never leaving them alone until you are 100 percent sure and even then watching for awhile. Newman took pretty good to Bella. Of course he growled a bit. I think they try to establish dominance in which by the way Bella turned out to be the boss and Newman the wimp. LOL. Newman is now Ten and Bella three and we actually added two more and all four get along GREAT. I think the first thing you need to see is if Baxter is dominant or passive. If he's more dominant then you'd want to get a more submissive pal for him. You really don't want two dominant dogs in the same house. That's just my opinnion, of course some more experienced may have more to say on this ![]() |

| ![]() Hello and welcome to Y/T. I got so excited to hear from someone who has a Cairn terrier. We lost our Cairn Trixie about 7 months ago. She was 16 yrs old. You never knew she was as old as she was (other than her graying hair). She was the most intelligent, loyal & loving friend. It still breaks my heart to even talk about her. We adopted her from my mother when my great aunt passed away. She was only about a year old. We got Reesie our oldest yorkie before we knew that Trixie was sick. Even as old as she was she took Reesie in and protected her. We now have extended our family and have Abbie who will be 5 months Feb 5th. I'll have to say that they had alot to live up to, and we have had our challenges, but they are sooooo precious and loving. Good luck with your search and I would love to see a picture of your Cairn. ![]() |

| ![]() Great advice! Thank you everyone! I figured we will have to be super careful for the first few weeks or maybe even months. Honestly, I've never owned more than one dog at a time. It never seemed to be a problem before but Braxton gets so excited when he sees other dogs and just wants to play. He's the most laid back Cairn I've ever known. Very passive and playful. Loves to be close to you - has to touch you at all times it seems. There's a photo of Braxton in my Avatar. Not sure how to put a thumbnail in for a larger photo...?? We bought a few of those down blankets last year and he's claimed the green one for his own! He's got softer hair than the other 2 Cairns we had - much more like a Yorkie or a Silky Terrier. I'm wondering if there wasn't some cross breeding in his back ground. I bought him at the Mall - I know, I know...NOT a good thing. But he was so pathetic I couldn't resist. He was just sitting there and all the other dogs were climbing all over him. He never flinched. Just stared at me with his little walled eyes and buck teeth. I could almost hear him saying - Please lady...PLEASE...For the love of Pete - GET ME OUTTA HERE! LOL He's been a wonderful dog though. Can't wait to get another to love ![]()

| ![]() Welcome to YT. congratulations on your prospective new baby. Hopefully the two will get along fine. It will take a little time, but they usually work it out. Try not to interfere with the initial greeting, but keep them both on leashes just incase. |

| ![]() One thing to consider is getting a larger than standard yorkie, so that if they do play fight / romp about ... the new pup will be able to handle itself. As for the intro's .... take them both to a neutral place (local park or something) to meet, don't tolerate bad behavior from either dog and walk them together for 30 mins at least, before taking them home. Keep them supervised and separated when you can supervise them, until you are sure they are okay together. Don't worry about an amount of play fighting, but obviously separate if any problems. I let mine fight and play until they start making a noise, and then I tell them to stop. Neither has been hurt yet. |
