| there already has been. I know people that do PUg rescue or Beagle rescue that end up trying to rescue puggles but only end up having to euthanize in some cases because of temperment problems that just cannot seem to be dealt with. I have seen labradoodles for sale because they were bought and the owners were allergic to the puppy. I have known of hip displasia showing up in mixes. Genes don't care if they are in mixes or purebreds. If the gene or comibination is there in a mix coming from the dogs in previous generations, the dog will suffer from that genetic disease. I have seen liver shunt in Maltese/yorkie cross pup, blown knees in cockapoos, disc problems in cockapoos where the dog had to be put down at only 6 years of age -- after having a couple of litters and who knows what the story on those pups ended up being. Cockapoos with severe allergy problems. So much for alleged hybrid vigour. |

| Is it just for the $ ? It's obviously not for the good of the breed or to maintain a standard.

I knew very well when the designer breeding started a few years ago it would just be a matter of time before people figured out many of the claims especially hybrid vigour are totally false. Unfortunately, it was at the cost of the owner paying the Vet to fix stuff, and at the cost of the dog that ended up in trouble. I am most upset with the temperment problems that have turned up in some of these crosses especially PUggles, where the dog ends up having to be put to sleep. If you are wanting to buy a puppy or dog and you find a good REPUTABLE purebred breeder, you'll know what you get in the breed, and you will have a breeder you can work with. BUt you have to be careful, anyone can call themselves reputable, the difference is in what they actually are willing to do to protect their line, their breed and help the puppy buyer.

| My husband bought my daughter's dog from what I later found out to be a puppy mill. He was supposedly a Pom, but the vet said he looked more like a long-haired Chi. He was so sick and debilitated when we first got him, it was hard to tell. Now that he's healthy ( and a whopping 3 pounds at l year old), the vet says he's more than likely a Pom-Chi mix. Not what we paid for, but he is the dearest little man. |

He may be a Pom, I have seen very poor representives of the breed in Poms look more like a LH Chi. He may be a mix, hard to know for sure. That's why it is so important to be sure of the breeder you are dealing with. The higher prices small breeds dogs are fetching, the worse it is getting for people wanting to get into breeding to fill their pocket books.

| Your right, he might be just an odd- looking Pom. He looks like a tiny fox. If I was dog shopping, I'd have chosen a reputable breeder, but my husband didn't consult me on either of our dogs. Both my Pom-chi and my yorkie came from the same breeder. They were both ill when we got them, and I have spent well over 5000.00 getting them healthy. Worth every penny, and I think my husband has figured out that he didn't get a bargain. |

| You are right. Plus, buying puppy mill dogs just indirectly leads to the continuation of the mistreatment of dogs. And "designer" dogs are a fad that may end badly for so many dogs. I maxed out my credit cards on vet bills for my dogs. By the time I get them paid off, who knows what the bill will end up costing. We've had to make some sacrifices, but at least we were able to get the dogs the care they needed. |

The problem with Designer dog craze is not that they are mixes per se, mixed breeds have been around over the decades but they were not given clever composoted names and sold for big bucks leading to buyers going along with it and perpetuating a myth and more mixed breeds being bred for the almighty dollar. Seriously there are so many mixes in shelters and rescues needing homes, if a mix is all someone wants, rescue one. Interestingly enough, I have now started to see the occasional ad for mixed breeds in newspapers for reasonable prices ie $200 that are called what they are -- mutt for sale. Now that's honest!!
