Neurting Question for First Time Mommy.

I am in the Brooklyn, NY area. This is my first yorkie i ever own. I am a little scared and concern of what procedure is necessary for my little one being neutered. He is goin to be 6 months the end of December. I have scheduled him for neutering on 1/16/07. As a concern parent i have a couple of question I would like to know before the surgery. I dont want to be ripped off or given false information by my vet. I prefer to be well prepared.

(1) what is needed before the surgery?
(2) Do I need to do blood work before the surgery?
(3) What anesthesia is preferred?
(4) Alot of people talk about extracting their baby's teeth the same day they are being neutered (why put them on anesthesia for the second time). How would i know if my baby need teeth extration?
(5) At wat age is safe to have your yorkie neutered.
(6) Is it required for yorkies to stay overnight?
(7) What does it cost for most of you who had this procedure of neutering?
(8) Did anyone of you have pain medication for your yorkies?

I was going to post similiar questions to these, my Kodak is 2 years old. He is about to go in 2 weeks, I am scared and I waited because he was suppose to mate. Now I am not going to mate him and I am about to get a female, so I will peek in on your answers.

You just need to talk to the Vet about the proceedures so you are comfortable with it. Blood work is needed because it can detect iif yoour dogs have any problems where they might be at risk for anesthia. It will also help put your mind at ease with the surgery

(3) What anesthesia is preferred?

You want either isoflourine or sevroflorine. No Barbituates.

(4) Alot of people talk about extracting their baby's teeth the same day they are being neutered (why put them on anesthesia for the second time). How would i know if my baby need teeth extration?

Chachi was neutered at 7 moonths and My vet was able to tell what teeth were probably not going to come out on their own and needed to be extracted. Talk to your vet aabout this before the surgery

(5) At wat age is safe to have your yorkie neutered.

Some people have had it done as early as 4 months but it is 6 months when most get it done

(6) Is it required for yorkies to stay overnight?

Talk to your Vets on this. They all do things differently. Chachi didnt have to stay overnight but i know other members on here whose vets ket their dog overnight

(7) What does it cost for most of you who had this procedure of neutering?

It was $110 for me. He didnt charge me foor the tooth extractions. I also paid $35 and had him microchipped. If you want to get your dog microchiped doing it when you do the neutering is a good time

(8) Did anyone of you have pain medication for your yorkies?

Yes I had pain medicine but not all vets give it soo you may have to ask for it. I found it beneficial to have it. I know it seems like alot but try not to worry too much. My Chachi came back from his neuter as if nothing had happened. The hardest part was keeping him calm and not jumping after the neuter

My little Sam who is 7 months was just nutered two weeks ago. I dropped Sam off at 7:30AM and was good to go by 4:30PM. When I picked him up, he seemed like he had just awaken from a very long nap and by the time I got him home, he was ready to play. The vet told me to keep him quite, dont let him run and jump, may not want to eat for a day or so and may be a little lethargic for a few days. Well, the lethargic part never kicked in and as soon as he got home he went straight for the food bowl. After Sam had a little kibble, he went in search of his favorite toy - a squeeky ball and we had to take it away to keep him from running for it. My little Sam never missed a beat, it was as if I paid the vet a 180.00 for Sam to take a nap while there.

I hope you little guy does as well as Sam did!

p.s.--does the procedure "change" your dogs personality at all? She's quite rambunctious now....and I've heard dogs become more subdued after this is done--is it true?

I have a male and a female and neither changed after their spay/neuter but i have heard others say their dog calmed down some

My boy was neutered 2 weeks ago, just had the stitches removed today . They did bloodwork a few days before and it cost separately, but definitely you should do it. On neuter day I dropped him off in the morning, signed the release form and was told to call about 4-5 to see how he was doing. They flushed his tear docts as well but he didn't need any teeth removed - he actually lost his last one a couple days before surgery ... No microchip and they didn't need to shave the paw (I had OK'd it in case of emergency to put caterer in). Hubby went to pick him up around 6 (I had to work ) and the vet opted to leave Pepper overnight as he was already sleeping and was sedated, really out of there. I went to pick him up first thing in the morning and he was very happy, already eaten his breakfast and I actually had a tough time to keep him calm during the first few days, he was back to his hyper self in no time... Bloodwork and neuter cost me around 230.
