| My Maddie was Choking!!! I was giving my girls a new treat today and Maddie was so excited over it that she chowed right down. It was so cute watching her eat it. Then all of a sudden she starts screaming in pain and didn't want anyone to touch her. My kids (fur and skin) all came running and I am screaming at everyone to back off so I could see what was wrong...I literally had to shove the others skin and fur out of my way to get to her. I picked her up and then I realized SHE WAS CHOKING!!!!!!!!!! She had swallowed the treat WHOLE!! Well, I did what first came to my mind...I pried her mouth open and shoved my finger down her throat. I just barely knicked the treat...but it did the trick and she gagged a bit, brought part of it back up, then ate it again. But let me tell you, no more whole treats for Maddie! It wasn't a hard treat either! It was a soft chewy treat. Now I am breaking them in half for her before giving her anymore!

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | OMG That would have just freaked me out - GOOD WORK getting that disloged..... I think it's a great idea if we have a sticky about the hazards of Choking in the Emergency section - I would have to rely on instincts and would be scared I'd be doing it wrong...after reading this thread - I already asked Admin ...everyone should know how to save your dog if they're choking. I'm so glad she's ok !! Poor baby - how scary |

| Truthfully, I just went with what I learned from baby CPR.....with my skin kids if they are choking I try to gag them to bring it up..this is ONLY if they are still breathing and haven't STOPPED breathing...so I figured it would work the same for my furkids...I am so glad it did! It only took a few seconds, but is sure seemed like a long time during the moment!

hopefully we can also have an addition on Choking added - that has to be the scariest thing to deal with cause you really are in a race against time | |

| Thought you werent supposed to stick fingers in the mouth since it could push the object further down the throat?? (really, i have no idea...been years since i took cpr)

I was just trying to make her gag so she would throw it up. I honestly didn't know what to do for a dog that was choking. With infants (human) I know that they say not to put your finger down their throat unless you can SEE the object causing the obstruction.

| Muffin choked on a treat when she was two or three. She also stood in the middle of the floor & yelped in pain. Unsure of what the matter was, I went to pick her up around her mid-section to check on her & I inadvertently dislodged the treat. It was completely by accident, but I was extremely pleased that was the outcome. (Not nearly as happy as Muffin was though!) On our next trip to the vet I told him the story & he gave me sheet about what to do if a dog is choking. I also found the same information on a website...here it is if anyone wants to read it &/or print it out. http://www.petplace.com/dogs/heimlic...dog/page1.aspx C.J.

| When my first yorkie was tiny I accidently dropped a piece of hotdog on the floor and before I could grab it she had inhaled it. She was choking so badly that she was wailing. My daughter was screaming to call the ambulance. In what seemed like an eternity she gasp and gasp and made an awful sound and fell to the ground and began to like spasm. I was frantic. I did not know what to do but I knew she was going to die so I just had to do something. I picked her up and with my hands stood her on her legs as if she was standing on her own. Then I gently and then repeatedly more strongly pushed on the air in her abdomen that was begining to swell. Then I panicked and pushed really hard and pretty soon she let out a gasp and horrible noise and began to breath again. The hot dog didn't fly out but I must have helped move it enough so that she could swallow it down. Now 3 years later I still shudder at that choking time and am so glad I did not give up even though I was shaking and crying. So I guess it was kinda like a heimlich only the object didn't fly out. It scared me so much I still am so careful of the size of anyfood in their reach as puppies will just gulp. |
