need some advice on 2 males - YorkieTalk.com Forums

OK....as most of you know. I got Toto the other day, the cairn terrier. MASON will not leave this poor dog alone. He is CONSTANTLY sniffing his "male parts" and getting on his back . Toto is very laid back but yestercday has learned to defend him self. He dont hurt Mason but he will growl if needed and Mason just wont give up..Its driving me crazy....outside..Mason is fine but once we get inddors he starts his crap. He actually bit my 8 yr old last night for no damn reason. I am needing some advice..I have read to quarantine him but i dont want to do that because i dont want Mason too feel like hes replaced and act even worse. Mason is a littl better today but hes still doing it!

Is Mason neutered?

no..and i know that may help some but hes like this towards everybody...my kids, me and jeff and even the bog dogs outside. they share food, water, and all that stuff but Mason just keeps on throwing his weight around......hes not humping him today he is just getting on his back and pushing himself against toto to provoke a fight....

It will take some time for them to adjust. Toto is doing the right thing letting Mason know it's not ok. Just let your 8 year old know that the dogs are adjusting to the new life and he needs to give them room. also letting mason know it's not ok with a frim NO may help. And make sure to prase when he does good.

I would just tell him no when he does it. I wouldnt isolate him that might make him sad

nNo im not isolating him....i give him treats when i give toto one..i pet him when i pet Toto....im giving the same amount of attention. its wierd...sometimes hes just lik a normal mason but than whammo and he turns into a little jerk...LOL

They are trying to determine who is the leader and Mason is trying to dominate Toto. If Toto is more laidback, try putting Mason on top of Toto in the group structure. Feed Mason first, give treats to Mason first. That might help lowering down the issues that they have now because you set it for them instead of letting them have too much say over it.After all, you are the leader of the pack and you set the rules for them.

Great advise that is what i was getting ready to tell you. Chachi was my 1st and he is the dominate one and we always give him the 1st pet and 1st treat and so on

im sorry if i sound stupid...but isnt that what im trying to get rid of.....lol..i want them to feel equal.....maybe that is asking for a miracle though! I look at them as kids..I wouldnt want one thinking their second best....

So far from what I have read you need to reestablish the role of alpha dog and let him know that the behavior is not tolerated.

i know....but im not i guess.. NOW he thinks my hubby is the most dominate. Jeff just has to change his voice and mason is chilled out.....I do everything IN my power to show my domience over him and he still growls and doewnt care!!

Non Neutered dogs can often show aggression to other males and I have also read about problems with children too... My mom's male maltese loves everybody and everything until he gets around my male golden retriever. He will attack him. It suprised the heck out of us.
