What works! Found a freaking tick - YorkieTalk.com Forums

OMG I am so upset right now. I found a tick on my pillow! So I was frantic and just so upset. I keep Cookie cleaner than my own kids! Well it's getting hot here and I take them to the backyard and let them play for like 20 minutes while I sit on the swing and watch .I got Cookie and checked every single part of him and found nothing. I did find the tick bite on the top of his forehead! This morning I go to get Mimi in my daughter's room. She sleeps with them in her kennel at night. I throw a towel over the kennel because it gets cold during the night with the a/c blasting. I found a dead tiny tick on the towel !! I didnt find anything on either of them. I know ticks love to be in the ears! Nothing ,clean as a whistle.I check ears,paws,butt,genitals and comb through all sections of the hair.

What can I bathe them in to make sure I didnt leave any on them.Is there anything that I can give orally like once a month to prevent? As for now they are NOT allowed to go on any grass ,it's the sidewalk or I carry them.A little old lady and man told me that they dont allow their 2 yorkies to ever go on the grass because of fear of deer ticks. We do have deer in my area! I've never seen one here but I know their here because my sister inlaw hit one with her car!

Any suggestions on what works and what doesnt ??? I know I really sound like I'm over reacting but I had a cocker spaniel once that was infested with ticks I mean totally infested and I was nautious trying to remove hundreds of these engorged yucky things ! I love these little furballs too much to have even 1 tick on them!

I treat Frankie with Frontline Plus once a month. It's not an oral med but it seems to work!

I use frontline as well. My vet as well as my trainer recommended it. So far so good no ticks.

i use advantix on dogs and advantage on cats where i am the fleas are use to the frontline it dont work on them anymore
also you can bath the pup in dawn dish detergent and it will kill the fleas and tick instantly and its very safe

my mother had lyme desiese sp? last year from A tick "eek: shes fine now i haTE TICKS !!!

To get the tick off now, cover the tick with olive oil, it will suffocate then you can pull it right off. Also, doing it this way makes it easier to pull out of the skin if half the tick (head) is emerged in the skin.

I hate those little buggers!!

Thank God where i live my Toto won't get ticks. But ugh hearing about the word Tick grosses me out, especially how to take them out. I was sitting here gagging. I get so paranoid with Ticks never seen one and don't want to. So ticks live in the grass? I live in California.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news April but even you living in Whittier CA ticks can get on your little fur baby.

Yes they are nasty, yes they live in grass, trees, shrubs, etc.

I hope he never gets one. He hasn't gone on the grass yet only the sidewalk. But i should check him after we come back from a walk? I feel sorry for my brother because he's the one whos going to have to take it out if he ever gets one. does it hurt them when you take it out?

I hope he never gets any either. See the thing is, YOU or anybody else entering your home can bring in the tick hanging onto YOU. They jump and latch on.

It doesn't really hurt I don't think IMO to remove the tick. The important thing is to NOT pull the tick half way out and leave part of the tick imbedded within the pet. Olive oil drenched on the tick suffocates/kills it and it can be removed with tweezers or fingernails.

what also works is Vaseline! it has the same effect, it smothers them so they back out..

Wow I've never heard of the Vasoline or olive Oil trick. I have heard you can light a match for a few seconds then blow it out and touch it to the belly of the tick and it will back out (something about the match being hot). It doesn't hurt though, or at least I don't think so. I've gotten them on me and it didn't hurt when I pulled it out, although they are a bit smaller so it might sting a little.

Oh my gosh....ticks give me the everlov'n creeps! I used to tell my kids if they got any ticks on them, not to come in the house or anywhere near me. LOL My daughter found one on Kirby, her yorkie, the other day...it was right near his mouth!

I live in Kansas, out in the country, so ticks are pretty much an every day thing. Especially since I have four big dogs, three of which are totally outside dogs. Anyway, it doesn't hurt to remove the ticks and you can also twist them as you pull them out and they let go. Nothing is left in the dog. It's a good idea to put a preventative on them, it doesn't keep them from getting ticks but it will kill them. You guys do know that certain ticks can cause a lot of problems in dogs like lyme disease and paralysis. Not trying to scare anyone but it's good to be informed.
