When we walk our little pups, Benson will sometimes choke himself because he is trying to run so far out ahead.

We have tried a harness before, but he always chews it and works it into his mouth where it almost chokes him. We had to cut it off and it was on tight but he still worked it into his mouth.

Do yall have any suggestions for this problem, or should I continue to use the traditional collar/leash combination. He chokes a little when he runs ahead but it never seems to cause a major problem

What about trying a Halti? Lots of members use these - they are supposed to be especially good for dogs who pull on the leash. And it's painless.

I would DEFINITELY steer clear of the collar - it may not be causing any problems now, but it is believed that using a leash/collar to walk your dog puts stress on the neck and can contribute to collapsing trachea in the future. There little necks are so fragile, it just doesn't take much to do permanent damage.

At the very least, try to train him to walk with a harness again - maybe try another style? I use buddybelts for both of my pups - Oscar is a dream with it, Ruthie is still learning - and she does try and chew it and get her mouth caught sometimes. She only does this when it is first put on and once we're outside and get going, her focus is on being outside and walking. Maybe you should try some puppy classes?

Keep working on your pup - just like everything else, walking properly is something that has to be taught and trained.

Definitely stay away from a collar for anything but looks. If he's coughing & choking that can't be good for him.

I would try the step-in harnesses, a puppia harness or a harness vest. Also being sure that they are real snug on him might cut down on some of the chewing.

Try not to use collars cause they are really not that safe for tiny fragile dogs like yorkies. I use a step in harness for Lillian it works great and doens't bother her at all.

Please don't use a collar with a leash for walking or anything else. Collars should be decorative only or not worn at all.

Try a different type of harness. Step-in harnesses go nowhere near the mouth. There are many members here who make harness vests that also are nowhere near the mouth, look very cute and are highly functional. We have several by Tiger's Mom at go.fetch.home.comcast.net

I agree..I use the step in harness with Lady..and from the time I first put it on her I have never had any problems...it goes now where near her neck and shes very easy to control while walking her...collars are very dangerous for small dogs...
