| Puppies at pet stores I was driving with my boyfriend a few days ago and we saw a petstore that I've never been to. I always love looking at new petstores because I am always hoping to find something new, cute, original to buy my babies. Well, we walked in and almost immediately I saw that they had two puppies! They were yorkie/poodle and yorkie/schnauzer. I asked how much they were and the guy said they were $600, but that day they were $450. I know, fishy right? He let me hold and play with them. I would never get puppies from a pet store because I know that it is very likely that they came from puppy mills and I really don't want to support that. But they were so cute and so sweet. I wanted to cry when I left there because I just imagined them coming from a puppy mill to the store, having to stay alone there at night when they should be at home and warm with a family, and then who knows who will buy them...I think having puppies in pet stores causes people to buy on a whim because they see a cute puppy and they decide to buy without thinking it through first (can they afford it, can they provide enough time, are they willing to train it, etc.) which doesn't always result in the best home. Well, my question is, does anyone else ever want to buy these pet store puppies to give them the life they deserve? I know I could give them such a good life. I would pamper them the way they deserve and they would never go without. But then, I am totally against puppy mills and know I would be supporting them if I bought one. It's just so sad... Please tell me I did the right thing by not buying them... |

| Funny you say that...I have seen TWO ads in my local paper this past week that were pet store puppies people couldnt keep for one reason or another..both were pomeranian mixes bought from a local pet store....I thought like you did..poms are ADORABLE..and people probably bought them on the spur of the moment just because they are soooooooo hard to resist!! You did do the right thing...we cant save them all...Im sure most pet store pups do find great homes though and I know there are many AWSOME mommy's on here that have pet store babies.. Dawn |

| Sorry if I wan't clear, I hope I didn't offend anyone here. I know that many babies here were bought from pet stores and they have the BEST mommies. And they are so lucky to have such great parents. I just know of many other dogs who have been bought from pet stores who, like you said, are later given up because the commitment wasn't thought through. I just feel like many come from such bad places, that I want to rescue them. |

| Chewy is from a pet store... I went for it because my hubby changed his mind when he SAW Chewy...and I didn't know anything about puppy mills at the time. All I can tell you is Chewy is the best little buddy and we all love him more each day... You may not be able to save them all, but if you can save one, give one a good home and make up for all the crap he had to go through to get a good home, doesnt he deserve it? I know Chewy did... I think they all deserve a chance... If they seem healthy and you really love them get one. You will know you saved him from who knows what... It's up to you but that's just what I think....

| i didn't know about puppy mills until i joined YT. I had heard about it but didn't really have a clue as to what goes on there. My parents bought Cash from a pet shop owned by someone they know and he says that he doesn't endorse puppy mills but you never know. anyway, everytime i go into a pet shop whether to buy supplies or to look around, I always get the urge to buy one of the adorable puppies in there cuz they always look so sad to me. all of them locked in a glass cage jumping for your attention cuz they want to play... it makes me feel bad so i try not to go into pet shops that sell puppies just ones that sells supplies cuz i know i can't afford another puppy.

| Hey you did the right thing. Petstores count on people to feeling as if they need to buy it to save it and they count on people coming in and impulse buying because puppies are so hard to resist. One of the biggest problems is that you really aren't saving them, what you're doing is putting money in their pocket and giving them reason to go and replace that dog, knowing that another just like you will buy and well you get it. It's a never ending cycle that has to be stopped. Good for you for not buying from a Petstore. Elaine |

| It's not JUST ABOUT THE MONEY! Quote:
I would hope that any one buying a pup would be looking to extend their family!!! This sounds like the puppy is just an item and has no feelings! Of course you are saving a pup and also getting a little buddy that will love you for life! I don't think buying at a pet store is the best way to go.. but if some one falls in love with a pup and wants to save it they should... there are two ways of looking at this, but remember that the pups in those pet stores have feeling, and have love to give and NEED LOVE TO THRIVE!!!!! This is not ONLY about the money... There are little sweet lives at stake.

| Don't pet stores get some of their pups from breeders ? I asked the girl in a pet store and that what she told me. She even gave me a telephone # because I wanted a boy and they only had little girls.

| Fourteen years ago, I bought a westie from a local pet store who was selling for a family member. He was the best dog I have ever had and his passing last year was terrible for me. After, my husband fell in love with a schnauzer from a pet store and brought her home without my knowledge. She is beautiful, loving, and has helped me with my grief. I don't know what I would do without her. I hate pet stores, but agree if you fall in love and have the committment, you are saving a puppy from an unknoown future. I just bought my new yorkie from a breeder and he is just a real joy. I guess you just never know when and where you are going to fall in love. |

| It's very hard, but yes you did the right thing overall by not supporting the store and puppy mills. Another thing about petstores and how the puppies don't go too good homes is that some let you finance the pups! Now it's even easier to buy one on the spurr of the moment from a petstore.
