First, let me say that thanks to YT I think I have a pretty good list of "reputable" breeders for when the day comes to add another furbaby to our family.

BUT, there is so much talk among animal lovers against byb's, brokers, etc, that it makes me wonder. With reputable breeders being so hard to find, and having so few litters a year, how did YOU find your yorkie's breeder?

I always feel like its a huge conundrum. We urge people not to buy from less-than-reputable breeders, etc., yet it seems nearly impossible for many people to find a good one. How do we truly expect to resolve this issue as long as the demand for pups outweighs the supply of quality bred ones?

Well the first thing is that sometimes you have to wait for that perfect puppy. The second thing is that sometimes you pay for quality (I say sometimes here bc there are a few people that sell quality pups for very little, and there are a lot of people who sell crappy puppies for alot). However, most of the people selling high quality puppies have a lot of money tied up into their dogs, and that makes the cost of producing the puppies go up. It's easy to charge very little for a Yorkie puppy if you don't have a lot tied up into producing it. And as long as people keep buying from the non-reputable breeders there will always be that kind of breeders out there.

AGREED!!!

that picture is SOO pretty!

A lot of times when you decide you're ready for a puppy
you have to wait at least another year to find the right one
that's hard
I know
but worth it!

I think there are plenty of good breeders out there. I'm not sure how one is to distinguish between BYB and any other small breeder.

I agree if you want to buy a show quality dog then you are going to have to wait, but there are lots of breeders that have good healthy puppies that do not come from champion lines.

You just have to ask around and get recommendations. Don't buy on impulse. Ask them for references. Ask a lot of questions, and if you aren't satisfied with the answers, then move on.

In my opinion, the best way to find a reputable breeder is to contact the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America, who then puts you in touch with your local Club. Your local club has a breeder referral service and they give you names of breeders in your vicinity.
