| Hawks and Owls I have heard horror stories about hawks and owls snatching yorkies from their yards. We have a fenced yard in the country, and always have Maggie on a leash. She is 9 weeks old and weighs 2 pounds. Will she ever get to run and romp in the yard? We even put a top on her outside playpen, while we are doing some yardwork. Any suggestions will be of great help. |

| My last yorkie weighed 3 pounds at adulthood. We have seen hawks, foxes around our neighborhood and at our cottage. She was never left alone, especially at the cottage. She was always on a leash or in someone's arms. A bit of a pain. I always worried about being carried away. The risk does exist. Our cottage is in a bay called "Hawk's Bay" Hmmm...i wonder why |

| We also live in the country. Oscar is 5 pounds at 7 months of age. He always goes out on a leash, but if I want to let him romp, I go out with him. And let me tell you, we see a lot of shadows coming over us...the hawks! They seem to shy away from him if I am out there with him. I just make sure and stick close to him all the time. We also have owls, fox and coyotes...I don't let him go for a second...I just don't want to lose him. The hawk got a kitten our ours once...and it was really close to the house too...happens so fast you don't have time to react. Better safe than sorry... | Debbie, thank you for responding. Hopefully I will never get very sick to a point where I can't go outside with her. I just can imagine losing her, and I've only had her 10 days. My heart just melts when I look into that precious doll face. Wishing you well with Oscar |

| I have to supervise Tia outside. The first time I took her out back, I looked up and two hawks were circling the yard! Scared me to death. Now when we go out, she's always on her harness and leash. Better safe than sorry.

| I live in a wooded area, and I never take Jack out without a leash. I think I have lost many pounds running with him so he can excersise. Neighbors have told me about small cats being carried away by chicken hawks, so I will never take that chance. Jack is 6 months old and 6 pounds so he would look very tasty to one of those varmits. Good luck with your baby.

| I am also scared to death of the hawks. We live in a community with a lot of open area and a lot of birds and wildlife including hawks, owls and coyotes. I have never known anyone whose dog was a victim of a hawk but I have heard the stories. I saved my cat from a coyote when we first moved in and didn't have a fence yet. She was in it's mouth and I scremaed and she got away. She was very lucky!! I will never ofrget it anf my yorkies do not go outside without a leash. I think it is best to wee wee pad train indoors in addition to outside raining for this reason. |

| Jack is trained on the pee pad, and we have now graduated to the Wizdog at the house. At my store he always lets me know he has to go outside, but there are hawks eagles and vultures around there too, so the poor guy is always on a leash.

| Thank you Kim for letting me know that I'm not the only one out there afraid for our babies. If I can ask you something. How did you get your babies pictures to change like a slide show? I would like to do that with Maggie's too. Thanks Again. |

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | Not to scare you... but you're VERY SMART to be worried about hawks - we have a member on another forum who had her very loved baby snatched up by a hawk right in front of her She was totally devestated and it's still hard for her to talk about it. She was right out there with her baby and it still happened - so yes...it's a great danger for yorkies - Hawks think they're bunny rabbits and scoop them up - even if they don't carry them off.... the talons will kill or seriously hurt a yorkie. Good luck !! |

| Red, thank you for you input on this subject. I would also like to say that your babies are beautiful. That dang hawk is going to have extra baggage to carry,if he thinks he can carry off Maggie, because I'm going to be riding his shirt tail. He will think twice before coming around Maggie's home in this part of Texas. We live just west of Fort Worth, where the fields are open and critters are still free to roam, but not Maggie. She is the one roaming with a leash and me beside her. |

| I live in the DFW metroplex about 5 mintues from the airport and I have a hawk in my neighborhood. So all you people who live in the city be on the watch out for them as well. I see it several times a week flying around. I never let my dogs outside without me. Even if you don't have critters to worry avout these little dogs can squeeze thru small openingsin fences, stolen , eat things they shouldn't, etc.
