| Personality-any way to determine if a yorkie will be a yapper or mellow as a pup? Hi, I was wondering if there was a way to determine if a puppy will be a yapper or be calm and mellow? I read somewhere dogs mimic their owners. If the owners are loud then the yorkie will be loud, if owners are mellow, then the yorkie will be mellow too. Is this true?? Does anyone know to determine the personality? Thanks! |

Actually, I think sometimes that the more laid back a puppy among its litter is, then that might be a clue. I say MIGHT. I'm still not totally convinced of that, either. I think training for most of them and socialization is what will keep you from having a barker.

| I think puppies are all different, just like people. I've seen dogs that come from the same litter be the total opposite of each other. Some pups are more like their father, some more like their mother, some are like neither parent. It's the same with people. I'm the oldest of 7, and although my siblings were all raised by the same parents and had the same upbringing, we're all very different. I do believe that environment has alot to do with it, but it's more than that. I think a dog's behavior depends alot on what kind of training you give him/her and how consistent you are with it. |

| I've noticed with my "skin babies" that their dispositions pretty much never changed from the time they were born--my oldest was a high-strung infant, and today she is a high-strung 23 year old; my middle child was a mostly calm infant with bouts of tantrums, and he is the same way as a 17 year old; my youngest was a laid-back, quiet infant and guess what? at 15, she's exactly the same. So, when I went looking for a puppy, I went looking for the calm one! Google was the calmest puppy I saw, but he had a sparkle in his eye and the way he moved around I knew he wasn't calm because he was ill; now, at 10 months old he rarely barks (only when he's startled or if a stranger is coming toward the door) and he's playful...but overall, he's a laid-back pup. My brother's brother-in-law has two yorkies that are a handful and when he met mine, he commented on how well-behaved mine was! I really believe that a person (or puppy's) disposition is pretty much set from birth, it's tied in to how they percieve the world around them; environment also plays a large role in how they turn out. So if you feel you have a hyper puppy, you probably need to exercise him a bit more than if you have a mellow puppy, just to expend the excess energy before it becomes a destructive force--too much barking, or shredding things, or nipping, etc. |

| I use the Volhard Puppy Aptitude Test to determine temperment before placement. http://www.volhard.com/puppy/pat.htm

| I dont think you can determine because Jewels was quiet and mellow as a puppy but is a yapper. I think you can control the barking with training, socialization and exercize. My dogs are barkers when they are in their yard but I can take them out places and they dont bark. I walk them twice a day and I think that really helps. They also now arent barking as much in their own yard.

| A prospective purchaser spends such little time with the puppies prior to purchase. I know my puppies don't even act the same when people they don't know are there. I think maybe the breeder might have a better idea on the personality since she spends a lot more time with them. Sometimes a usually very active, playful pup will act completely calm and docile and a usually calm dog will bark, jump and carry on. So I would say visit the pups many times on different days at different times to learn the most about their true personalities. |

Can the breeder give this test and get accurate results or should the tester be someone the dog is unfamiliar with? | |

| I will be honest I don't think you can go by any test. When we went to see Diesel he wanted no part of any of us. He didn't want to play with anyone but his brother and his mother. I had to go get him in order to even touch him. He didn't lick or anything. He was a very calm and somewhat scared pup. When we brought him home it was a LONG time before he came out of his shell. Now today he is very active when playing and very lovable at the same time. He LOVES our German Shepherd they are like brothers. He also is fine around children. He is still alittle scared of some kids but he does very well with them despite it. He in my opinion is a very well rounded dog. He is NOTHING like he was as a pup. HE wasn't a barker as a puppy. He was VERY quiet almost to quiet at times. NOW he will bark at any strange noise he hears. He loves to bark when he is playing. So yeah I would say he is a yapper! LOL I wanted to also add that Diesel only barks at home and out in the yard just like Chachi's baby. He doesn't bark when we are out in public. Hope things work out. Good luck
