No Longer a Member | Yorkies size verses weight I was wondering why AKC puts the weight stipulation on Yorkies. To be fair shouldn't it be by height and length. Im sure a tall yorkie that is really thin could be 7lbs and under while a small yorkie that is a little heavier could be over 7 lbs. AS it is AKC rule is that it "must not exceed 7 lbs." but they dont say over 1 lb or 2 etc. By them not stating a height then people can breed them as small as they can. |

| Can't answer the question as to the reasoning of AKC's standards, but weight can vary a lot with bone structure and height. I know my 4 3/4 pound female looks smaller than my 3 pound 14 oz. boy. |

| It's weird because my breeder said that they can disqualify you because of weight. She has an 8lb yorkie who is her top champ. He is #1 in Argentina and has now come back to the states to compete again and his doing very well in the states. he was born here and competed and was winning before he left. suzie |

| Given their small size - the 4 to 7 pound or 5 to 7 pound weight variance is quite a bit. It's true that Yorkies can shorter, shorter legged, longer, taller, more solid, etc. than other Yorkies. The standard weigh range is only what they need to be to be shown. Other than this - it makes no difference what our Yorkies weigh - and there is really a huge range. (I have heard from 1 1/2 pounds to 18 pounds - go figure!) I think it's fine the way it is. ***** My 10 pound Yorkie plays with a little 5 pound Yorkie all the time - and they really don't seem to be that much different in size. They are both about the same height, etc. Mine is just much more solid and much heavier (though not fat at all). The other little guy is thin- thin - thin and longer legged. Carol Jean |
