| Simon vs. Pit Bulls I've been a more quiet member of this board for a while but I think you guys are so awesome, and no better place than to ask opinions here. I have new neightbors who for WHATEVER reason own pitbulls that not only never shut up, something about their general presence makes SImon lose his doggy mind. I've gone next door and introduced myself, mentioning that I noticed they had large dogs who - while wagged their tails at me.... were growling at the same time. This made me think these are mental animals. Even though the neighbors have a large dog run within the backyard, they don't put the pits into it. It's not my place to tell them to but... Simon and Delilh (Deeds is not a yorkie) have a doggie door so they can come and go as they please, which is fair for well behaved dogs who aren't aggressive nor get into trouble. These dogs constantly stand at my fence... staring at Simon like they wonder if he would be better in BBQ sauce or ranch. It scares the crap out of me and I can't imagine what I'd do if I came home to find that sort of thing. Simon Pickle is 6 pounds... a little ball of typical yorkie personality who is very much not likely to back down if these animals go nuts enough to come into my yard. I am daily watching the fence integrity, but everyday since they've moved in I can't stop worrying while I'm away at work. It would not be fair to lock my animals inside, and I worry about fires and things if I did. They are good dogs, I don't feel I should punish them, but don't really have a good reason other than concern for my babies to go next door again and say something. Advice? Thanks guys, you are the best. Jeni |

| Oh duh I forgot to mention my hubby and I have lived there for years, with former neighbors having dogs and there was never a problem other than all off them barking in unison when something was going down. Simon DOES think he is bigger than he is, but has never been agressive to any animals but these dogs. I didn't mean to imply my beast was innocent, but something about them is provoking him. Lol.... he will normally retreat from a cat, so this new behavior has me troubled. Jeni |

| If it were me, I would reinforce that side of the fence, and completely block it so they can't stare at your guys even....something like plywood, for instance? Good luck. |

| It's six foot fence, they are just peeking through, but I understand what you mean. Only because they are so big.... a few digs could allow passage for a little yorkie... so short of laying concrete I'm not sure how I can keep those mean bastards away. Thank you for the reply. Jeni |

| My friend has 4 pits, yes they are good animals, but I wouldn't trust them at ALL!!! She had to pour concrete, get individual kennels, put tops over the pens, and lock the gates....good dogs...right!!! Watch your babies close, b/c if they are "game bred" they'll get 'em... oh, I have seen pits climb trees, so a six foot fence would be peachey. BE VERY CAREFUL!!!!!

| I can invite you to see Mojo playing with 2 pits (and beating them upp..hehehe, they are beastssssss) I cannot understand if you worry only cuz they are pits...now if they look theatning toward your dogs, talk to your neighbors, make sure they know you are worried, it is their dogs, so they should make sure nothing happens...just make clear you are a responsible owner that loves your pets.

| Maybe you can suggest they reinforce thier side of the fence and you can maybe find a way to reinforce your side. It might be worth a try. I plan on putting some landscaping boulders by the fence where there is a a space under the fence. |

| These dogs constantly stand at my fence....staring at Simon That alone would have me worried. There was a situation just like this on Animal Cops but with Rottweilers. They managed to get through the fence and kill the neighbors Chihuahua. Don't trust them for a minute. Sorry, I don't have a solution to your problem since you don't want to keep them inside but I think you are right to be concerned.

| I don't have a solution either, but if you don't trust the pit bulls at all, I'd rather not let your dogs out while you are not home. You just can't know what a pit bull is capable of and while it may be a bit too cautious, I'd just hate for an accident to happen. |

| I agree that you may not want to let them out when you are not home. I love pit bulls, and just about any big dog, so this is not against pit bulls at all. If they were mean looking poodles, then I would be careful. Since you can't control what other people or dogs do, then I would not let my dog out of my sight if I was worried about them getting attacked. This may seem silly, but can you move? Are you locked into a mortgage or lease or can you get out of it? I'm sure I'm not much help. I hope you can figure something out and keep your little ones safe.

| Maybe get a chain link kennel and put it so when they go out the doggie door they will just be in the kennel area. A friend that has 5 yorkies just put in a doggie door and they just go out the the kennel area, they even put a top so no hawk can get them. Just a thought.

| I will be worry too if my neighbors larger dog was eyeing my yorkie. I think is safer if you keep them inside when you are not home or build a kennel like Maddy-rudy-mom suggested. I think building the kennel is a good solution, cause that way your dogs dont need to be restarint inside the house and they can go outside when they need too but be protected. Also reinforcing the fence is defenitely something you should discuss with your neighbor. Good luck. Last edited by Marie; 04-28-2005 at 09:53 PM. |

| You need to do something immediately!!! And I don't think that just because they are pitbulls, b/c some pitbulls are wonderful, friendly animals. It is easier than you can imagine for those dogs to get through your fence and get your dog, and then it will be too late! If there is nothing else you can do, you need to keep your dogs inside while you are not home. Just my opinion. |

| I have the same problem! We have a new neighbor with an older pit. It wags it's tail while it attacks the fence and barks ferociously at the same time. I don't get this behavior either. It does this to my children and to all of my dogs. This pit has sent my 6 year old son screaming into the house because of the attacking of the fence. It is scary and even I have jumped out my skin when he's done it to me. I am home during the day and I always go out with my little dogs and kids. I didn't use to but I am afraid one of my smaller dogs might find some kind of little hole to squeaze through or something. But if I wasn't home I would do exactly as maddierudymom suggested. I have a chain link pen outside I put my small dogs in when I can't watch them, it is also covered because we have many hawks. If you butted one up against the doggie door you would have no worries while you were away. |
