| Question aloha every one i'm new and am not quite sure what to title this thread but here goes...i am intrested in buying a Yorkshire Terrier and have been researching the breed for quite a while and having grown up around three i know thier flaws (my aunt's dog and his two children are not completely potty trained and the 'puppies' are 5 years old!). But this question is more having to do with a particular puppy...or a breeder per se...i have been pouring over the classifieds for a while and found a breeder whom i am going to meet with tommorrow (so i'd kinda like advice tonight i know i know). She sounds like a wonderful lady, has been breeding and raising AKC yorkies and chi*s(wow i don't even know how your begin to spell chiuahla tehehe ) for quite some time but the female in particular i am going to see is 8 months old. I'm just worried as to the reason this little girl is only 600 dollars and why she has been kept that long when most of the yorkies in this area are sold at around 12-16 weeks (3-4 months) with females her size (around 4lbs) selling for thousands! So i'd love to hear your feedback/advice and thanks in advance! *cooki |

| You definitely need to speak to the vet who has been caring for the female and make sure she is healthy. It's possible the breeder was waiting to see if she got big enough to breed, but $800 ia not much for a quality female. You are right to be suspicious. |

| Well good luck...it could be anything..maybe the breeder was waiting to see if she would be show quality and then it didn't turn out well?? Show quality doesn't mean it wouldn't be an AWESOME pet though...just make sure you get a health guarantee and take her to the vet before making a purchase...GOOD LUCK let us know how it goes!!!! |

| i will certainly get the vet's info tommorrow and have a talk with her/him...how can i tell possibly without a vet check first if problems are just thoes that keep her from showing... (if you guys couldn't tell i'm a horse person and all this craziness is nuts to me! some of these dogs sell for as much/more than i've seen quality horses bought for!)...if possibly she is not show quailty and she does fill out about another pound or so (as i said i haven't seen her/weighed her myself yet)are there legit reasons as why i could not breed her myself if i so choose? spanks! *cooki |

| You may want to do a search on "breeding" in the forum to see all the pros and cons of breeding a Yorkie - a lot goes into it. I would say the breeder is probably looking to sell her as a pet as she didn't turn out to be either show or breeding quality.

| If she is not show quality or breeding quality then it is best to keep her as just a pet. I don't breed, don't know much about it, but i do know enough to understand that breeding should be left up to reputable breeders whos primary purpose is in the betterment of the breed. Seriously, if you are thinking of breeding, try finding a mentor first, and then buy a dog that is of breeding quality. Good luck, let us know how it goes. |

| She has to be pet quality for $600. You are right to question. Baxter was $600, which isn't much (females are more expensive though) and he is just fine (he's 1 1/2 yrs). The fact that she is only $600 and is 8 months old, I would be leary. Ask questions and find out what the deal is before you buy...it could be something as simple as she held it back to breed and now everyone wants a puppy...but I would make sure I was comfortable with buying her. Don't be in a rush...if she isn't the right one, you will find one. If she isn't the right one, you will be much happier that you waited a little longer for the right one.

| There could be many reasons why she is 8 months old and the breeder still has her. Trust your gut when you go meet the breeder. I can tell a lot about a person when I meet them. Ask if you could have her checked by a vet before anything is confirmed plus ask for a guarantee. Don't be intimidated if she tells you " Trust me she is in perfect health, she's already been to the vet" The price would worry me too. Unless she sells most of her pet quality pups around that price range. Genie |

| visit... so i went to go see the breeder today and i was quite dissappointed. first of all the breeder was a little over an hour away and i had talked to her about 3 times on the way over and none of thoes times did she mention to me that the female i was going to look at was already sold. so anyway i got there and her home reeked of urine which kind of freaked my dad and i out. But we went in anyway and she showed me a 8 week old that was already ckc registered (well her papers were filled out minus the name). so i picked the timid little girl up and as i picked her up i felt her nails, i don't think they had been clipped once! i smelled and felt her coat and i believe she hasn't had a bath either. i also noticed her ears aren't standing up and that her back is slightly convex. so i asked to look at her dam and sire and the lady said they were in the 'kennel' (no seriously she left it at that). i asked about the sizes of the parents and luckily i had thought to bring along my scale to weigh her and she weighed in at around 3 and half pounds. i couldn't believe it! so then i asked if she had seen a vet and lady said no! she said she does all thier shots, worming, and tail docking herself. we got tot talking about this female and she starts talking about how she isn't a tiny one but that makes her good to breed and was saying how much money i could make. well i told her i'd have to talk to my mom first about it and daddy and i got out of there. so basicly it was pretty much a bust but she was so cute and i may have pictures so y'all can see tommorrow. tootles *cooki[/FONT] |

| O How dissappointing!!!! She DOES NOT sound like she needs to be breeding yorkings at all. That is so sad for the little one that lives there still. I assume you aren't going to get her vet checked and take her are you? Knowing me, I probably would. I wouldn't be able to keep her off my mind.

| thats the problem...i still want her so bad...it's like i want to save her and show her what it would be like to be completely spoiled. but daddy said the list of faults i gave for her is just too much of an offset....so unfortunatley no but i am keeping her in my prayers. i am also praying the pups i go to see on thursday turn out a lot better, the woman sounds very knowledgeable on the phone she has been breeding for 11+ years... wish me luck *cooki |

| GOod luck with everything...I'm glad you went there informed and knew to ask all the "right questions" sketchy people hate informed people. Good job on getting out of there. We will all keep that poor puppy in our thoughts and all the other pets that woman has. Make sure to let us know how Thursdays visit goes!!!!!!!! |

| I know it's difficult to leave the puppy, but believe me you did the right thing!!! It would have been more heartbreaking to have a potentially unhealthy puppy. The right puppy will come along!! It took me almost 6 months to find Tucker & I knew as soon as I saw him that he was the right one. Good luck on your search!!

| I just wanted to say that you sound like a very knowledgeable and well-educated buyer/future parent. I'm impressed that you brought a scale with you to the breeders! I'm sure you will find the right puppy. Like everyone else has said, trust your instinct. Good luck!

| aloha Hi You used the greeting..ALoha, are you in Hawaii? We have a another member from Hawaii, she PM'ed me about how difficult it was to find a puppy locally..she had to import..and I do not think it has gone well so far..hoping her situation improves. Since this pup is going to be over 10 pounds and is CKC registered, the breeder is no doubt selling her very cheap??..you could get her and take a chance on good health...although how does the breeder know if the pup has a heart murmur or congential eye problems if they never see a vet before leaving...And since they never see a vet, her bills must be very, very low, so she can afford to not ask much. Good luck |
