| Culling is the killing of a limited portion of the population of a group of animals. This may be done to improve breeding stock (by killing individuals with undesirable characteristics), improve production of eggs or milk (by killing individuals whose production is relatively low), prevent the spread of disease (by killing infected individuals), or simply control the group's population for the benefit of the environment and other species.

| sounds to me like they mean culling the ones they turn down as show dogs and want to rehome them. In other words they'll never be show dogs for one reason or another. This is how I took it. Culling means turn down or deny

| I don't think culling necessarily means killing. To say the least, they might could have phrased it a little better. |

| They are not using the term "culling" meaning to kill. The first or main meaning for this word means to take or remove from a group - You could cull the best apples from the tree to take home. You could cull some cows from a herd to put into another pasture. You could cull the Yorkies from a group that you feel should be sold as "pets" and not as "show quality." ------------------------------------ Actually - the way the word "cull" is used above is the way I have always used it. (I have very rarely heard it used meaning "to kill" .... it just isn't used this way often... I have only heard it used by Wildlife Management programs trying to regulate populations of wildlife, etc.....especially deer.) Remember - when you look up a word in the dictionary -- there are often several different meanings... Carol Jean |

I would suspect likely puppymills would not want to be bothered raising a puppy that may be doing poorly or have a disability and likely would kill it or let it die. No breeder who cares ever would do that. Culling is also used in livestock production where some of the new calves, lambs etc are kept to produce the next generation. Others are culled (sent to market) for the food industry. when I have a pet puppy to sell as I don't want to keep it for show, I never use the term culling as it conjures up some bad scenes in my own mind. | |
