We just visited my brothers house today and was told he just had a dog die of parvo a little over 2 weeks ago. We did not take our litte one with us but are still worried about bringing parvo home to her. They have cleaned their house with bleach and it was over 2 weeks ago. What are the chances of us bringing it home on our shoes or clothing? We pulled our clothes off at the door and threw them in the washer immediately, left our shoes outside and jumped in the shower without even greeting our little Gracie (that's difficult to do). Are we being a little over cautious or not?

not at all......... i think i read something that said parvo can live for MONTHS...... i would be careful as well,

sorry for the double post......... you might want to wash youre shoes down with some cleaning solution too....... cant be too careful

If your dog is vaccinated well, there should be no problem. It is always smart to wear old shoes to a dog show and any place a bunch of dogs gather and not wear them in the house...not silly at all.

I dont think you being over cautious. Is better safe than sorry. And i agreed you desinfectant your shoes.

YIKES...take no risks. My puppy was diagnosed w/ Parvo. She's alive and well, we caught it very early! The vet told me it can live for months...Even though they bleached and disenfected everything, I would do the same for your house, dip the bottoms of the shoes you were wearing in bleach to kill off any bacteria you may have came in contact with. My vet said that since my dog was around my parents dogs, they need to get the parvo vaccine again, just to be safe, even though theyre older dogs and have already had shots etc. It's always good to be safe than sorry. Also, don't let your dog come in contact with any other dog's dirty business. That's how it spreads!!! Also, dont let your dogs play with your shoes! I hope this helps.

I am really curious.. How did your brother's dog contract the parvo? Had he not kept up the dogs shots OR (a scarrier scenario) the dog got it even though it was properly vaccinated.
I do not let my dogs touch anything at stores like PetSmart. There are so many viruses and so on that can be picked up from the floor. I take a blankie and put it down in the seat part of the cart. I have a sign that says "MOM SAYS ASK BEFORE YOU PET US! and I don't let people touch them. If someone is insistent, I just smile and say "If you have dogs at home you might want to stay away from strange dogs like mine who might have a contagious disease!" You would think I zapped them with a stun gun they pull their hand back so quickly..LOL
I throw the blankie in the trunk and put them on a clean one in the car...

I have a Mastiff who when we adopted her from a shelter had Parvo. It did not show for a few days after we got her. I was devistated and over whelmingly nervous for my Belle. Even though she had all of her vaccinations, therre is always that chance. We took no precautions anyting that could be bleaches we bleached. I would even poor a bleach mixture over where she pooped. Thankfully that was 1 1/2 ago and everyone did well. Good Luck and never feel like you asre being to protective. After all your babies count on you to protect them.

They got the dog as a gift from someone who purchased it from Petland. They only had it about 3 weeks or so and it started acting kinda funny so they took it to the vet and found it had parvo. It ended up dying about a week later. I dont believe Petland is going to take any responsibility for it as they can't really prove where the puppy got it from. They originally brought the dog over to our house when they first got it, good thing we didn't touch it or anything. His wife had it in their car and they never got out.

IMO I thinkk that stores and shelters should have to check for Parvo and Kennel cough before they sale the animals.

I had a collie that i bought from my aunt that breed collies she gave me a discount on him .we just moved in this house and i was training my pup to go outside for potty had him for 2 weeks and just about had him house broke he started getting real sick took him to vet and they ran tests and found out he had parvo he was all up to date on shots .the vet said who ever lived there before us must had a dog that had parvo before , the vet said it could live in your yard for years so we had to buy this stuff from pet store to disinfect everything we decided not to get another dog until we moved from there because we couldnt go threw that pain we lost the collie 2 days later after discovering he had parvo we were only renting this house , after we moved my aunt ended up just giving me anoher pup .

Whata sad story! Im so sorry to hear about your loss. I was very scared I'd lose my dog Kelsey. She means everything to me, I could only imagine!

It is a good idea you didn't get another dog until after your move.
