| Please Help have a butt question Okay tonight Tommy went to potty on his pad (yay) but he had some stuck to his hind end so I cleaned him up with warm soapy water and it was all better. Except I remember something on here about the glands back there how do you know if they need to be squeezed or not and I don't really remember any of that thread, but it felt alittle different like it was a little puffy or something but it was not red. I don't know someone please help. I don't even know if it means anything or not he is my first Thank for any help

| i got it done at my groomers for only 12dollars (it included haircut and nails) i'm from southern california so i don't know where you can do it in indiana. you can try expressing them yourself. by pushing them out? i have only watched my groomer, i haven't actually done it myself, but thats what it looks like she does. im not sure if its safe to do it if your not experienced, so maybe we should wait until someone with more knowledge comes along |

| The vet can do it. I asked at Bailey's vet appt yesterday and my vet said they normally release them while they are pooping, but sometimes they get backed up. I asked how to do it, just in case & she said she doesn't recommend me trying to do it, because you can rupture them, I guess. So call your vet & ask |

| I would have the vet take a look-see and if they need expressed have the vet do it. At least the first time. I have not had a Yorkie that has had a problem but I did place a girl in a pet home and she had infected anal glands after a week or so being in her new home...Yuck!!!!! |

| My personal experience is that if the diet is good quality food and the stools firm, then the sacs express themselves. Dogs will scoot their behinds on the floor if they are needing help, but in my experience keeping firm stools solves the problem.

| I would check with the vet first...not all yorkies need this to be done. I even specifically tell the groomer NOT to do it...only my vet will do upon needing it. I have asked him do it once, and he said it was normal...so i just leave it alone..

| I'm curious as to what is the exact purpose of these anal glands. It obviously seems that dogs can sense/feel when the glands are full. Is it a discomfort to them? Just curious as I've seen dogs exhibit the behavior of scooting their butts along the ground. Just curious as to the "function" of these glands. Last edited by DomLee; 04-20-2005 at 08:44 AM. |

| also, I've noticed that if he has a tummy upset, he will drag his butt on the floor and look concerned. I think that having a tummy upset, caused him to think he needs to make bricks, so he desperately tries to pop the sacs so he can go.... it's hard to explain, so I will stop.
