| Need advice about harnesses I've heard many things about collars on yorkies. I was told not to use the collar to walk them. I have one on my yorkie, but just for ID purposes. When I walk her I use a harness. However, I have noticed that she "hacks", she makes coughing noises like she's trying to get something out of her throat. Could it be from the harness? I never tug on it, but sometimes she gets so excited about walks that she runs and then finds the end of the lease to be shorter then she would like. Also, I've noticed that she "hacks even when she isn't wearing the harness, for no reason. But it's more apparent when I'm walking her. Any advice is appreciated!

| Yep its your harness does it go around the neck? If so you are stll going to have problems. I had one like that and my Jewels hacked. I got a step in harness and vest harnesses for her.

| Hobbs used to do that when he would get really excited. It sounded like he was trying to cough up a hairball or something. I was really worried at first that he might have a collapsed trachea, but his cough went away. I would not think that her harness would cause a collapsed trachea. But, if you are really worried about it then take her to the vet. Sometimes dogs just need to cough like humans do. Maybe she is just coughing Good luck and I hope she feels better soon! |

You can tell if you are pulling then through the throat. If you lift the d-ring on your harness, see if the neck is strained . . .if so, then the harness you are using is not good. I did that on my vest and the new "T" harness and tested it on my baby Annika. The fabric on the neck area does not even touch her neck when I lifted her up holding just the d-ring . . . so I know it is SAFE.

| Since you've already heard about step-in and vest harnesses (lots of good resources for these on yorkietalk), I wanted to tell you about one I found recently tha works pretty well too, and I like it because it gives us another "fashion option". It's the "easy-on" harness at udogu. The website is: http://udogu.com/products.htm Ginger has the leopard harness and leash. It's really cute. The harnesses are really nicely made and soooooo easy to put on. The front strap seems to hit low enough on her chest that she doesn't hack when she's wearing it. The only drawbacks are: it seems to tangle her hair more than her super cheap step-in from PetSmart AND it does have a front strap where the step-ins don't. The drawback to the step-ins is that I have found the them a little easier to "slip" if they aren't pretty snug. Good luck!

Step-in harnesses are the way to go. I make mine from Dupioni Silk which not only is very elegant in appearance, it is very strong and extra gentle on our furbabies' very delicate hair. Silk does not matt and tangle up the hair like other fabrics. At present I have 26 vibrant colors to select from.... I add new colors almost weekly so if I don't have a color that suits your fancy I will be more than happy to try to find one that does. suggestions.

| Nikko definitely likes to pull on his harness during walks and i found that he hated the step in harness. He would squirm and give me a hard time putting it on. I bought him a puppia harness and he loves it!! It is super comfortable, easy to put on and they come in lots of colors. I paid about $20 for it in a pet store around my job but you can get them online. It was worth every penny and I recommend it.

| My yorkie would cough & hack when excited My 8 year old yorkie always started coughing when trying to play with my chihuahua or when we tried to play with a toy with him. My vet never could find anything physically wrong with him. I think it just got to be a habit. My husband could even get him to do it by hacking himself (he thought it was so funny). It definitely was not his harness as he only wore that on walks. |
