I know there have been threads before, but Sissy just came from the vet where I asked about microchipping. Our vet's office does not offer it as a service because there are three different companies offering chipping who all use different scanners. The vet said that unless your baby is picked up by a facility that uses the same scanning equipment as your chip that it won't make a difference.

She said all her babies are tatooed on the inner thigh, with a national registry and this is what she recommends. However, they have to be anesthetized for this.

Sissy has an extra baby tooth still on the bottom (with the adult tooth as well). If it doesn't fall out on its own within the next month, it will have to be extracted and she will be under anesthesia for that. I think if this occurs I will have her tatooed also.

Any other opinions on this??

I've heard about the 3 different kinds of chips also. I want to get all four of mine done, but what's the point if they can't read the different kinds of chips? I don't know if my Vet does the tattooing or not, I will check into that. Would definitely have to keep the area hair free for easy viewing.

oh my what will the other doggies think when the see a tattoo? lol j/k i have thought about the homeagainpets.com (they show it on tv all the time)microchip for my baby i think it's only about $30 but i'm not completly sure. i thought tattooing was for farm animale like cow or horse herds?

MY VET SAID THE SAME THING ABOUT microchipping. I THINK I AM GOING TO TATOOING GIMPY. HE TOLD ME IT WOULD COST ABOUT 90.00.

I DON'T KNOW TO MUCH ABOUT anesthesia BUT WHAT I HAVE READ I WOULD DO IT ALL AT ONCE.

I AM WAITING TO SEE ABOUT HIS TEETH AND GETTING HIM FIX AND TATOO AT THE SAME TIME. I ONLY WANT TO PUT HIM UNDER ONE TIME IF I CAN HELP IT.

I KNOW THATS A LOT ALSO WORRY IF HE CAN HANDLE THREE THINGS AT ONCE

YOU JUST DON'T WIN YOU ALWAYS WORRY NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO.

my dog is chipped and tattooed, he was tattoed on the ear when i got him, the tattoo is fair ly large ,you can see it but it doesnt bother me, tattooing is very standard in europe.. because if the airport has a machiine that wont read you, the tatoo number will still be use for identification on the computer.

I wish this had been on my mind when I had Sissy fixed 4 months ago!! The tatooing and anesthesia is only $70, but add the pre-op blood work in and thats another $65. If she has to have teeth extracted, I will do the tatooing, otherwise I'm hesitate to put her under anesthsia again. She did fine with her spaying, but I hate to be more invasive than necessary. I'm just worried that microchipping is going to be useless.

I had Lucy tatooed & microchipped when she was spayed. I wish I would've got Lucky tatooed also, but only had him microchipped. The tatoo is your name along with a 1-800 number to call.

i have been seriously thinking of having my furbabies microchipped and my concern with that was there were more than one chip but i was told yesterday at a vets office that just because their machines are for mircochip A doesnt mean it wasnt notice microchip B, it just cant identifiy which, it still notices that there is a chip, but it can only read A. so then you just have to try another machine.

Ive heard that the tattoos are fairly easy to alter..that's the only thing that makes me weary about it..

I have a dog that was tatoo'ed 4 yrs ago and the tatoo is very readable even with long hair. It isn't that big and depending on where you get it done it is fairly cheep compared to chipping. Chipping cost $30 plus $15 to reg it then if you move it costs another $15 to change info on it. I have never seen a dogs tatoo altered. We use to tatoo everything at the shelter I worked at. Also there is a new tatoo pen out that the dogs do not need to be anethitized for. It is vertully painless and writes just like a pen. I am looking into buying one and offering tattooing at a reasonable price. Around $30.

I have never got my dogs tatooed before, it is something I might consider because there are so many different chips out there that they would have to make a universal scanner that reads them all. I did get my rabbit tatooed once, boy was that horrible and I will never do that again. No anesthics or anything, poor rabbit screamed and I it looked like it hurt really bad, I felt so bad afterwards. Oh, and woulden't it be really hard to alter a tatoo without it looking like it was indeed altered??

I'm a research buff and couldn't help myself.....I had heard on the radio about computer viruses affecting microchipped dogs. At first I thought it was a hoax until I started researching and came up with this article. I'm planning to tattoo both dogs on their bellies.

I much prefer a tatoo over a chip...never had to put them under for it..they do not have to go very far into the skin like a human and mine never react..but since they put them under you have no choice.
Many breeders know tatooers who are excellent.

The breeder I got Tetley from does her own tattooing, so he's got a nice little serial number on his belly next to his...well you know

. I call him my little ex-con.

It's very well done, legible, and no hair grows there anyways so it will always be visible.
