coughing vs grunting.... - YorkieTalk.com Forums

not really sure what thread this belongs on.....not really a medical emergency but we are having a tough time differentiating whether Addy is grunting or coughing? shes been hacking alot since we got her and we are wondering if she needs to be treated or if shes just being silly. she grunts alot but every now and then she sits and hacks. then shes ready to play again.

any ideas?

this website explains it. i can't explain it unless i can make the noise for you. alot of people would come into teh vets office thinking their dog was coughing but in fact they were reverse sneezing. its normal. read that and see if it sounds like what yoru dog is doing

nah....this is definatly expiratory......she is pushing air out....like a cat would hack up a hairball.....she always runs away to do it too...(manners!) then she will come right back

i've just had Holly at the vet as she has been coughing/snorting/sneezing,especially first thing in the morning,when excited or the odd other time-up to 4 or 5+ x a day. He is treating her for an upper respiritory tract infection--anti-inflamatories, and amoxel. She stops if i stroke her throat,but it was hapening too often for my peace of mind. I'd have her checked at the vet.

Oh my gosh. I have had little dogs for almost 10 years and I always thought that they were hyperventilating when they had these reverse sneezing attacks. I have always been able to get them to stop by just picking them up and reassuring them that it's okay.

Kalina82, thank you so much for posting the link with the reverse sneezing information. I always wondered why my little dogs would occasionally do this. When I tried to explain these episodes to the vet he was never able to tell me what it was.

Relieved to finally understand.

no problem tpaxton, alot of owners have no idea what this is and it scares them. and unless you or the dog can do it in front of the vet they can't tell you for sure what it is. the vet i worked for did a good impression and he always brought it up when an owner came in for unexplained coughing or sneezing.
