| I thought dogs were supposed to be scared of snakes... My boy Scout is full of surprises! I take both my yorkies to a little cemetery that is just around the corner from our house, there's a fenced area that I can let them off leash and they can run around and sniff the bushes and explore, etc. Scout came around a bush with a little green snake in his mouth and I about freaked out. Of course I run at him like a crazed person screaming something like, "that's a snake, put it down". He dropped it and looked at me with puzzlement. I think he thought it was a toy! Every dog I have ever seen go crazy when they see a snake. I just hope he doesn't go around picking up snakes as a habit...I don't know what I would do!! That's a terrier for you, I guess. By the way, he didn't kill it...he must have gently picked it up (I don't know how you gently pick up a snake with your teeth, I'm still trying to figure that one out)..it slithered off as fast as it could when he dropped it!

| I know my pup wouldn't be afraid of a snake - especially a small one. Dogs may have an instinctive fear of poisonous snakes, but I would doubt that our little terriers do. Almost anything that moves is a toy or critter to be chased as far as they are concerned. I do know that snake bites are just as dangerous to a dog (more so to a small dog) as they are to a person, and that a dog needs to be kept as quiet as possible and needs to be taken to the vet immediately if it is bitten by a snake. As far as I know we have no poisonous snakes in our area - but I'm sure a lot of you do...... and, I'm sure it would be best not to let your little dogs run unleased in any area that is questionable. Snakes are just one more thing to worry about, aren't they! Carol Jean |
