| Help, I Can't Stop Her From Climbing Out Of The Gate Dezi stays (is suppose to stay) in the laundry room while I am at work (3 days a week, the other two days she goes to doggie day camp). She has managed to climb out her 3 gates already. On Saturday I bought a metal gate (horizontal bars). Well, we put the gate on the laundry room, we watched her. There was a small gap between the pressure mount and the door frame. She was able to stick her head through the gate and she was stuck. I held her head still while my husband took the gate off (I was so scared, I thought she was going to hurt her neck). My husband attached the extension. With the extension there was no gap. We watched her again. She did not get out. On Sunday we put her back in the room several times so she can get use to it. She did not get out. This morning, we put her in the gate and as my husband and I are getting ready for work, who do we see running around? Yes, Dezi. My husband kept telling me, I opened the gate and let her out and I kept telling him, I did not. He kept saying, she does not fit through the bars. Even though she is 4 months and 3 1/2 pounds, he said she would not be able to fit through the bars. So we put her back in the laundry room and we watched her AGAIN. Well, she was able to put her head and body sideways and was OUT AGAIN!. Ok, now I decided to put a carpet (small carpet from my bathroom) through each of the bars. I told my husband I should get a prize for such a clever idea. Well, Dezi is quiet in her room and we finally solved the problem. As we are walking out of our bedroom, guess who was able to jump up and was hanging from the edge of the carpet? Yes Dezi. At this point I wanted to cry because even though she is wee wee pad trained, she likes to bite plugs, cables, wood, etc. I am so concerned she is going to get hurt. She does not seem to be afraid of heights, jumping and or fitting through the gate bars. I had to close the door to the laundry room. I feel so bad because she can't look out, but I had no other alternative. My husband send he was going to buy a piece of plexi glass and put it in front of the gate. Do you think this is going to work? All you experienced yorkie moms and dads, please give me advise. Oh forgot to mentioned, I tried crating her and she hurt her paws trying to get out of it and like I said before, I work all day so I am not able to take her out every two hours. My husband does stop by at lunch time to check up on her and she is quiet and/or sleeping. |

| i've got a climber too. i ended up getting a 4' high gate with bars only and used the gate he can climb at the same time. the high gate had one gap on the side, and the bottom gap that he could slip through when he does some creative contorting with his body. so what i did was have the bars only gate was place facing the confinement area and the cross-hetch gate was placed facing the outside area. that way the gate he can climb prevents him from slipping between the bars of the bars only gate, but is too far for his little legs to reach with enugh leverage to grip and climb. there was a few times, since i had an ecollar from his neutering (which i found was completely useless because it didn't extend far out enough to prevent him from licking his wounds, but it was prefect for this case) i'd put the ecollar on him so he couldn't slip through or under the bars only gate. because the ecollar didn't extend out far from his nose, it didn't prevent him from eating or drinking with it on. he just looked kinda pitiful and cute at the same time. haha. now that he's bigger and older, i use only one gate and he doesn't try to slip through it anymore. |
