bad first night

He's here! It's been how many months I've been emailing on this group and researching breeders! He's awesome...but I'm exhausted. No sleep last night. He would NOT settle down. All wants to do is play. He also would not pee outside (3 hours int he car and we would stop) or on the pee pads I brought. I finally put him in his crate in my room even though he wouldn't "go". I was so tired. 11pm...ugh
He whined and I was so worried about him messing himself. I thought...okay...I'll put him on the bed to calm him down and sneak him back in. I tried petting him but he was CRAZY. I went to get something...and he peed on my down comforter!!! Ugh.
I cleaned that up and put him in his crate and let him whine. He finally calmed down for a couple of hours but our pilot light went out and the house got SO cold. He started barking. I woke up because of the cold too. His bark was raspy. He is still battling a cold. I was nervous that the house was too cold and was so tired so I put him back in bed with me in the dark. He slept like an angel the whole rest of the night. VEry sweet dog.
Problem is....I am being told that I need to crate train...I gave in...and what if he jumps off the bed and hurts himself...and what if he pees again?

I never put small puppies in my be I was too afraid of them jumping or falling down. What I did was put them in a small crate and put them beside my bed so they could see me and that kept them from crying or barking.

My Mini does well in her crate ..i keep it right next to the bed also and she has never whined about being put in there. Good luck with you little one ..

Congratulations on your puppy !! I know this isn't the best advise ....but I had both my girls in bed with me the first night...I got up every 2 hours for the first month and only had one accident in my bed.....I would put pillows all around the bed if you are going to have him with you.....or you can crate him and just keep him near you ?

Good luck and keep an eye on that cough....I hope its nothing serious.

The truth is the puppy is like a baby and if you start sharing your bed now he will always need to sleep with you. I know that its hard to hear him whine and lose sleep but just like a baby you are gonna lose some sleep the first couple months make sure to take his food and water up a few hours before bed and make a potty trip before bed and then put him in his crate and let him cry it out, resist the urge to yell at him, talk to him, or even look at him any attention is attention even negative attention. He may for a while get up once or twice a night o potty thats fine, take hime out let him potty and right back to bed. My hannah got up twice a night for 2 weeks then once a night for about 2 mths now she sleeps through the night with no potty breaks it just takes time. Good luck!

Great advice! And if you WANT the puppy in your bed, you can move him in LATER after he's housetrained and sleeps through the night. Remember, your goal is a completely housetrained well adjusted grown up dog who knows you are in charge. It's so much work to achieve that later if you give in now!

Puppies will fuss when put in their crate, but if it doesn't achieve anything (no attention from you) they will stop and settle down. It just takes awhile.

Enjoy your new pup, this will all be a DISTANT memory sooner than you think!

i had Cali in a playpen next to my bed with a wee wee pad at one end. She would sleep until 2 or 3 in the morning and then iwould put her in her little carrier and put her on the pillow next to me and she would go right back to sleep. When she was almost 5 months old I put her in my bed and she's been there ever since. I do have stairs nest to the bed so she can get up and down by herself. It does get better hang in there!

Yea, I tried the crate thing but my pups were in such misery that I couldn't stand it!! In bed they went. I was very nervous about Mari, being so small that I made sure she was in the middle, and I lost sleep but I LOVE her and Rico next to me, crossways, making me hug the edge

Angel is another story, I have only had her a month and she had ALWAYS lived in a playpen, and the breeder let her sleep with her a lot. She is 10 mos old so she is more comfortable in her crate, which is one for a 50lb dog. Also she is so fragile that I would be afraid of 'breaking' her.

I put Penny in bed with us on the first nite, surrounded the bed with pillows so she couldnt fall off. Hubby said he felt like he was sleeping on a cloud with all the pillows around, it was pretty funny!!!!

She has always slept with us from nite one. Only one accident and it was my fault, i was playing hard with her on the bed and you know how little ones cant hold it, and Whoops the pee was a running....

I can't help the original poster, as I'm still trying to read and prepare myself for all this tonight!

I don't mind a dog sleeping with me, but I'm afraid of messes on the bed (JUST bought new bedding!), and, call me lazy, REALLY don't want to have to get up every two hours to try to get them to piddle!

Is there a problem with, as one person sort of mentioned, keeping the pup in a pen beside your bed, with just room for a bed, and a piddle pad? They don't need to eat or drink during the night, do they?

The problem is...he won't stay in a pen next to my bed or in a crate. He keeps trying to jump up and the crying is so loud...plus he is still sick from a bug he caught from a dog show. Ugh!

First congrats on your new addition. When it was our first night with Jeremiah, I kept his crate in my room and put some cover over it. If he can't see you, he won't be as rowdy. There will be a whine every once and a while.

When we got Tobias home we gave into his crying and let him sleep in the bed. We've never had a bed accident aside from an upset stomach once or twice. He would cry the entire night in the crate and we'd be awake until morning. Since then he's been in the bed every night. It's amusing now that he's all grown up he complains(growls) if we disturb him while he's sleeping in our, ops... his bed.
Don't roll over or move while you sleep!
He must know i'm talking about him, he's been really good the past day or so.

Because Topher spent a long day travelling to us in his kennel, his first night was spent in bed with us...and he slept through the night! He was tired of his kennel that day and I can't say I blame him!! I want my dog to sleep with me, so had no problem worrying about him getting used to the bed. He's only had one 'accident' in my bed days later and that's because I didn't recognize the signs that he needed to go pee. I made sure that all of my linens were washed and changed, though, before I let him back on the bed. I didn't want him to smell the bed and think that peeing was ok there!

He's slept with us ever since and goes to bed with me around 11 or so and sleeps till I wake him in the morning. He's only jumped off the bed once, and I got cross at him when he did so, so he hasn't done it since. He's a bigger boy, though (8lbs now)...even so,, he's still small to be jumping off of the bed onto the hardwood floors.

He is crate trained, also, and it's a place of comfort for him. He goes in his crate to nap during the day and he goes there when he wants to be on his own.

I think it's just a matter of preference. If you don't want your pup to sleep in bed with you, train him to stay in his crate at night. It will take a few nights for him to get used to it, but he will get used to it.

Congrats on the new pup!! It's just like having a baby in the house, that's for sure!!
