| a little nervous... I am taking my Kody to be nuetered on Monday. He is 7.5 months old and 2 pounds 1 ounce. He is just tiny - always been healthy, very playful and no issues with low blood sugar (ever). My vet said he would do blood panel and give him a special anethetic through a cathiter (sp?) to take extra precaution. I am still so nervous because he (the vet) didn't want to do this until he was 3 pounds but has finally conceded he will likely never be that size. Anyone had experience with such a small yorkie getting fixed? |

I Love Thor Donating Member | It sounds as if you have a really caring Vet, this leads me to believe that he is in good hands. AS complications do occur, hopefully your little guy will come through with shinning colors! I will keep him in my thoughts. |

| Hobbs is 6 months old and not quite 3 lbs, and he got fixed on Wednesday. I was extremely nervous and anxious about it, so I made an appointment to go in, sit down, and talk to the vet about my concerns. The vet told me that they way they administer the anesthesia is by weight...so they weigh the dog, plug the weight into a machine, and the machine determines how much to give the dog. He said that the surgery only takes 5 minutes, so they are not under long at all!! After his surgery, I called the vet to check on him, and the vet told me that he ended up not giving Hobbs an IV at all, but just sedating him with gas (isoflurine gas, which is the safest). When I picked Hobbs up that afternoon, he has a tiny insicion where he had his surgery, but other than that, he acted completely normal. Since then, it is like he never even had surgery! He's been running, jumping, playing, eating, etc. like normal. It really does sound like your vet really cares. I know the doctor knows what's best, but ask the vet if there is any chance that he can just give him gas to put him to sleep. There is less risk with gas, and a shot can be used to reverse it's effects if something happened. AND they wake up right away with gas, whereas with an IV they are out for a while. Hope this helps!!! Trust me, I know how you feel. I was freaking out because of Hobbs' size. But, the vet did tell me that size does not matter at all...he said that what DOES matter is age. And it seems like you have that base covered. Let us know how eveything works out! I'm sure he'll be fine. |

| It's good that your vet is taking good precautions. A plus though is that there are now safer anesthesias available and vets are spaying and neutering as early as 8 wks as long as they weigh in at least 2lbs. Also, as long as his "pom poms" have dropped and everything is normal the surgery will last TOPS 10 min.. 15 is pushing it.. And if you're still really worried maybe you could consider leaving him overnight so they can monitor him for a more extended period of time to make sure he is adjusting well. I hope everything goes okie day! It's ok to be nervous, it's bc you love him so much!
