I'm going to be getting a puppy soon and want to ask anyone that might have any experience in getting their dog to use a litter. i've done some reading and know that cat litter would not be good for dogs. i've seen the dog litter made by purina although it seems like it would get kinda pricey after a while. then a couple of friends mentioned they use cedar chips for their dog's litter. any comment or suggestion would be appreciate it.

I'm thinking of using the Wiz Dog. I think it is wizdog.com or something. I already bought one. I am getting my puppy in 3 weeks. I wanted something different from carpet.

I think they would track the litter around the house and I know cedar is bad for a bird's respiratory system so probably isn't great for a dog's either. I think the pad's are great and they can be thrown away easily when soiled. My dog is trained to go only outside, but my mom's come to visit often and they use the pads. We buy them at Sam's club made for people and they are a whole lot cheaper. They are only about $20 to $25 for a 100 to 125 of them. The only draw back is that sometimes they think my bathroom throw rugs are fair game, but they're washable.

I used the Purina litter for the first 7 months or so. It became a hassle to travel with and Luci seemed to not really like it that much. I switched to pee pads. She does GREAT with them and they're easily portable...no need to bring the pan and the litter. It's also hard to tell with the litter when she went to the bathroom. Poop was obvious, but not pee.

Our 2 girls have used puppy pads for the past 8 yrs, they will also go outside but that rarely happens. We found it very helpful when a UTI came along, it was easily detected on the puppy pads and was treated early. If they were going outside on the ground who knows how long they would of carried the UTI without treatment. Thats the biggest plus we found with monitoring their pee.

When traveling, the puppy pads are very handy whether in the RV or in a motel. No problems at all.

I just ordered Target's brand of the wizdog. 40 bucks! then found a similar item at walmart for a cat that was only 10.00! It would have to be modified a bit but hubby is a whiz with stuff like that and I could have saved some money. I think daughter is getting it to try.
