| Adding another bigger dog to family? Hi! I am new to Yorkie Talk. We just got our Yorkie for almost 2 months now. She is 3 lb 2oz. at 4 months so far and growing. We want to add a female Shiba Inu to our family later down the road, perhaps sometime soon. Both of our dogs will be spayed. Do you think this is a good idea? Will the female Yorkie get along with the female Shiba Inu? Any feedback will be greatly appreciated! We got our Yorkie at 9 weeks from a breeder. Mai Tai is now 4 months. We will be getting our Shiba Inu as a puppy from a breeder as well. In case this information helps! |

| No, I would not recommend it. based on the temperamant discription from AKC. http://www.akc.org/breeds/shiba_inu/index.cfm You also might want to read this thread. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...ight=Shiba+Inu

| http://www.shibarescue.org/ I had never heard of Shiba, but according to this web-site, you may have trouble having two boss dogs in the family! I would do some research on both breeds. Good luck with your decision! # In their eyes, Shibas can take on the world no matter how big the foe or the task. They are dominant with other dogs and do not usually get along well with other "bossy" dogs of the same sex. Many Shibas will, however, get along great with another dog or cat that agrees the Shiba is boss. # Shibas can be runners. The Shiba Inu is a natural hunter. Given a chance, Shibas will take off in search of game. It is advisable to never trust your Shiba off-lead unless in a fenced yard. # The Shiba's least favorite word is "come." They will usually take your number and get back to you, when called. # Shibas have a mind of their own. While it is possible to obedience train a Shiba, it is a challenge. Tell him to sit and he sits . . . sometimes. If there is something in it for him, and it is convenient at the time. # Shibas always like to be in charge; their favorite word is "mine." Although not "barky" dogs, they do yodel and scream anytime they feel they are being violated, such as nail trimming, bathing, and leash training.

| Thank you for your quick response. That's what we were afraid of- we will not be getting a Shibe Inu then. Do you think it's a good idea to add on another Yorkie or just keep it at one? Are there any particular breeds of bigger dogs that will get along with a Yorkie? Also, should we get a male or a female next or does it matter? |

| Well, I have six yorkies! I know a lot of other people here do have bigger dogs. If you are really wanting a big dog, look for one with a really good temperament to get along with mean little bossy dogs. (not that yorkies are mean, but I think they tend to aggrivate big dogs, and they are delicate). I have 3 boys and three girls. I think either are great! I have all my boys fixed right now.

| Wow 6 Yorkies?! That's amazing! If we do get another Yorkie, we want to get it from the same breeder before Mai Tai is fully grown. Otherwise we may just keep her as an only child. I'm guessing a male Lab would work the best probably? If we do decide on getting a bigger dog? |

| Yeah, we started with two, had babies and fell in love with all of them, so we kept them. Now the pups are 8 months old! Sometimes it seems like a lot, but I always say, they are still less than 50# all together! Big dogs eat a lot, but yorkies need lots of baths! Mai Tai is a cute name! Is it a girl?

| Yorkies are very social little ones and love having a buddy around. Is your little one home by herself for a good part of the day? I think the perfect number is two Yorkies and I don't think sex matters. If you got a second dog and it was a large breed you have to be very careful because accidents happen as simply as the large dog jumping up and then down on the little ones back. We have lots of members with large dogs and lots of members with more than 1 Yorkie. I have 10 Yorkies 5 girls and 5 boys and each has their own personality.

| Someone is always with her and we have no kids in the family. But I am planning on going back to school by summer so I was thinking of getting her a playmate by then. She gets so excited when she sees other dogs. I think another Yorkie will be the greatest things for all of us. Thank you so much for all your responses! I will definately be posting a lot more! |
