| puppy lunges when i mock slap someone hi everyone , i have noticed recently in the past week, that if im playing arround with a friend and i mock slap them on the hand or leg.. my puppy will attack and tries to bite them or sometimes me. she will even lunge at me if i slap myself. she also does the same thing even if im not involved and its just two friends. was wondering if that is normal, if any of your babies does that. tinkerbell is almost 6 months, she is healthy, playful... she was trained using positive reinforcement with treats and treats. i have rarely given her a gentle tap when she is being extra naughty. just worried that she might have been abused before i got her 3 months ago or if this is normal. |

| Every dog reacts differently to many things. This is not "normal" for any breed. This should be trained out of her using positive reinforcement. I'll ya a lil story. Many years ago my first dog as an adult was a toy Poodle but bigger than the standard toy.She was about 2 years old, it was winter, I was having difficulty removing my boots, I asked my (now ex ) husband to pull them off for me. When he went to pull the boot off MY dog latched onto his wrist, didn't break skin and let go just as fast. Well we all (my son) thought it was so funny that this lil dog was protecting me. As time went by, every so often either my son or husband would play grab the mamma's leg and MY dog would lunge at them. Now she is 10 years old, we had bought a house and had our first New Years Eve party, invited friends, family and neighbors all ppl that MY dog knew. I was sitting talking to someone to my left, a neighbor sitting to my right, wanting to get my attention put their hand on my knee, from out of no where MY dog is latched onto their wrist, let go just as fast. My neighbor was startled because of MY dogs reaction, this was a sweet loving dog. Because over the years I didn't train that out of her, thought it was cute, funny, things could have been a lot worse. Reason I suggest train that lunging out of her using positive reinforcement.

| This isn’t disagreeing with what Joan said ... it’s expanding on it. Yes, you do need to train your dog to stop using inappropriate behaviors, which would include lunging or biting at humans. The easiest way would probably be to teach her “sit” and/or “down” and then use one of those commands to stop her when she lunges or bites. However, you also need to understand that dogs are sensitive, and they don’t understand mock anything. If someone is being slapped, your pup doesn’t see that as a funny game, she sees it as someone being slapped, and it agitates & upsets her. So do teach her not to lunge or bite, but also be sensitive to her. Don’t slap anyone in her presence when you know it agitates her |

| I agree with both responses. My boys even bark and act out when my husband embraces and/or kisses me, or (pre-covid), a friend would hug and/or kiss me on the cheek. We tell them "stop and sit", and reassure them that it is OK. Luckily, none of my dogs has ever escalated beyond barking!
