Yorkie barking

Hi,

We have a 7 month old Yorkie, our first ever pet. He's been generally well behaved till now but recently we've noticed he's started barking a lot when he's been indoors for an extended period of time (more than 1 hr). We have a backgarden in which we let him out for his business as well as when he gets bored indoors. However he tends to bark randomly when we let him out in addition to barking indoors. Any commands to get him back inside usually are ignored by him(unless we dangle a treat in front of him)We have tried distracting him with toys but with limited effect.

I'm sure this is not the first post detailing this problem. Any pointers from experienced owners will be of huge help.

Yorkies are known to be barkers. My oldest was not and my youngest only barks at her siblings when they wont play but my other 3 are definitely barkers for what I sometimes think is no reason but generally they hear something we can't. It is their only voice so I have not really tried to stop it. I would work on the come command because it is very important like one of the most important. I would in the house have 2 people and go back and forth maybe even changing where you are at when you call him. Then do it with a leash outside and just keep working on it. If you have someone who can hold him while you go hide and then they put him down and you call his name to find you it can be a game and work on coming. Use treats a lot of treats and first and then start weening off of them as he gets better at it. Call in a very high pitched happy excited voice. Never call them to you to fuss at them.

Jax doesn’t bark excessively, but he does get over-excited and bark when he (thinks he) perceives something suspicious — which may or may not be an accurate perception since he has impaired vision. And he definitely has “selective yorkie hearing” when he’s excited by something, so it’s difficult to shift his attention away from the suspicious sight/sound/movement.

However you address the barking, be sure you’re not inadvertently rewarding your pup for barking. If you try to distract him from barking by offering a treat, you’re likely to teach him to bark when he wants a treat.

My boy is not a constant barker/ yapper, he'll bark if sees someone near the property or someone comes to the door.

Dogs have a keen sense of hearing, my guy barks if an ant crosses the road in the middle of the night.

I agree with teaching your pup to come, it can save his life. If no other training words are taught, the one that must be is to come.

Yorkies are known to have "selective" hearing lol.

My yorkie has grown up in the city, she doesnt really bark at noises or things. She chirps, huffs and puffs, and barks when she wants to cuddle.
My husband made the mistake of taking her out in the morning to go potty then bringing her to bed to cuddle.

Now if she just goes out to potty and goes back into her crate she raises hell. I think lock down has created a monster haha.

Piper barks to get attention and reprimanding her is maybe good for 15 seconds, maybe! I learned from another Yorkie member that if I go into a different room and close the door for just maybe 15-30 seconds, Piper gets the message and pretty much calms immediately...I know, riiightt??!!! When outside, Piper is permitted to bark (briefly) at passers-by and such, but I am prepared to go and fetch her is she doesn't hush quickly when told.

Piper also raises hell at the doorbell and or knocks and that's just fine by me, mighty little protector that she is...!!

Besides Come command, I've worked on STOP Command. It is a life sa saver!!! It means what it sounds like. Funny but true story. I was training stop outside a shopping mall, three humans stopped dead too! So funny

OMG, that is soooo funny.
LEAVE IT, also another possible life saver. Cody is very easy to train, he is very food motivated so learns in one day commands. And when the momma says leave it, he leaves it. It has saved possum attack and kitten attack. It's so very important to train the smallest of dogs just basic command that may save their lives.

I am completely impressed with Cody's abilities. As you well know (cuz our two are soooo alike), Piper, too, is food motivated and does very well with "commands" in the house and on-leash, but when it comes to chasing critters, Piper has tunnel vision/hearing and a brick wall might slow her down, but wouldn't stop her...!!!

A spray bottle with water works. I used this with Gidget when she was younger. When she was barking for no apparant reason, I would spray her and the barking would stop. She soon learned what the bottle meant. If she was barking and saw me pick it up, she stopped barking immediately. Then I would tend to her -- pick her up, make sure she had plenty of water in her bowl, etc. It worked and didn't hurt her and didn't involved giving her a treat or a toy or something to distract her from barking.

Cody is not dog friendly and this can be very dangerous. 8 months after adopting him I enrolled him in obedience classes. 6 sessions once a week. What he learned in 6 weeks was to lunge at the dog we were working with, I signed up for another 6 sessions of advanced training, the trainer told me to use the spray water each time he went to lunge, I thought this would be the perfect solution to stop him since he's scared of the "fly swatter". I figured a couple of squirts would do it, figuring once he sees that bottle he wouldn't lunge.

Forget it, his face would be drenched, he had no fear of the water spray bottle.

Water spray does work on dogs, just not all dogs, I should have worked with the "fly swatter" instead.

Riighht!? A thousand years back, I tried water bottle with my German Shepherd puppy to alleviate biting. Turns out the dog was half duck. Loved water and would even go after the high pressure water at car wash!! Geez louise!! Glad so many here can offer so many great options!

Not everything works for every dog, but ya gotta try all that ya can. It depends on how determined these lil monkeys are.

When I vacuum, I have to tie the fly swatter on the vac to keep him from attacking the vacuum.
He has seen the fly swatter in action when I go after a fly or wasp. Cody is petrified of the fly swatter. If he's on the deck leaping at the railing because the deer are in the field behind the house, I threaten I'm getting the fly swatter.

Ears get flatten to his head and the leaping stops lol. I don't need him to have another back injury.
