| Sleeping It has been 15 years since we have had a yorkie pup. (We had to put down our sweet 15 year old Abbey last April and now we have a new little one to love.) Our new little one, Molly is 10 weeks old and weighs about 2 pounds. She seems to sleep a lot during the day. Our first vet visit showed her to be active and healthy. Labs will be done in 2 more weeks. Is it common for her to take lots of naps? She plays for 30-40 minutes and then sleeps for 40-60 minutes. Thanks for sharing your experience |

| Yes, it’s not just common, it’s necessary, for a pup that age to take lots of naps. They play hard and they sleep hard. Frankly, she’s a little young and small to be away from her mother. Most good breeders keep small breed pups like yorkies with their mothers until 12 weeks, to give them the best possible start in life. So do be sure to have Nutrical or something similar on hand for at least the next few months, in case of emergency. Small, active pups are prone to life-threatening hypoglycemia attacks. |

| That is extremely normal for a puppy.

| Thanks for answering my question. I appreciate that. The breeder did give us a written health guarantee (but just what is that worth). We immediately took her to our vet to be checked out. She said she was very active and ears, eyes, hips and stool checked out well. She had no worms. The breeder had her on a nutritional supplement and gave us quite a bit, (but she doesn’t like it), along with bag of Royal Canin tiniest puppy food. I asked our vet if we should continue with the supplement and she said only if she wasn’t eating well. She has food and water readily available at all times...in her crate, in our living room and on our enclosed patio. She is eating very well. 😊 We also leave some food in her crate at bedtime. When she starts sleeping through the night we will start cutting that back. She has gained weight in the few days we have had her. She will be 11 weeks tomorrow. A lively bundle of joy. She is our third yorkie and we strive to be kind loving and gentle pet parents. We are seniors which is why we have had three. Our first two lived long happy healthy lives. She chose us and wanted to come home with us and we were approved. We had to present references including one from our vet. I think we will all be ok. But I do know despite doing everything correctly there can still be problems that arise. But we have done our very best and she will be much loved and cared for. |

| Yes, it's very normal for puppies to take lots of naps, they are so hyper in their play and burn a lot of energy they need that sleep. Congrats on your new baby girl Molly.

| Thanks it is nice that some welcome me back. I really appreciate your kindness and response to my questions. I Was once very active on this board and my husband and I are not new to puppies or yorkies. But it has been 15 years since we brought our tiny Abbey home. We still miss our little girl every day. But we now have little Molly to love and care for. We have several yorkies in our extended family. But none are puppies at this time. I simply thought this site would be a good source of information like it was 15 years ago to refresh us about yorkie puppies. Sadly not everyone has been as welcoming as it once was. |

| Molly sounds healthy and happy and adorable, and I can tell you’re loving and experienced pet parents. I didn’t mean you needed to feed a nutritional supplement, though, since you’re feeding a good quality puppy food. I just meant you should have something like Nutrical for emergencies, since tiny puppies can have hypoglycemia attacks. Hypoglycemia attacks can be sudden and unexpected — and life threatening. It’s best to be prepared, just in case. |

| Here’s a short article about hypoglycemia, if you want to read about it. Not that I’m trying to worry you, but it’s better to be prepared than to wish you had been prepared. https://www.thesprucepets.com/low-bl...uppies-2804768 |

| My little Jake is 8 now, he was a much welcomed gift. He was so tiny he fit in the palm of my hand. He was very active, one minute he would be jumping up and down playing and a minute later he'd just fall fast asleep anywhere. Congrats on your new addition! |

| My little Gidget is 4 1/2 and still takes lots of naps. If she plays hard for 20-30 minutes, then it's nap time for her. She plays hard and sleeps hard. Sometimes if we've been for a long walk, she won't even make it to her bed before she lays down and takes a nap. She's either "up" or "down". There doesn't seem to be a happy medium. |

| My two boys are four and five. As puppies they did the normal play hard, sleep hard routine. Then they went through a phase of always being active, and looking for mischief. Now they are mellowing out and they have two to three play sessions where they go full steam, then settle in for cuddles and naps. Congratulations on your sweet new baby, and have lots of puppy fun with Molly. There is nothing better than puppy kisses from a tiny, squirmy little bundle of energy!
