If I were in your place, I think I would tell the vet that it didn’t agree with my dog and ask for something less toxic.

Uneasy indeed! Toxic is actually an understatement. Double P II has STRYCHNINE in it.

No way, no how would I give that to my pup. I am horrified.

To be fair, there have been studies that show Double P II can have positive effects for dogs suffering from Intervertebral disk disease. However, IVDD is a progressive, degenerative spinal disease that can result in paralysis if left untreated, so I suppose it might make sense to risk what otherwise might be considered drastic treatment when there’s evidence it might slow the progression of the disease. I don’t think I would take the risk with my dog, especially with Jax who weighs less than five pounds, but I can understand why some pet owners might find the risk acceptable, given the alternative.

I have had many pups with IVDD ..... my own and my fosters. There was only one that we had grave concerns about and we did a neurological consult. She was a 4.5 lb yorkie. The standard treatment of anti inflammatory meds, pain meds and crate rest were done. No surgery thankfully was needed.

Not only did the vet here suggest using this "herb", but she did a chiropractic adjustment. To each his own...but, personally , I would never allow any vet to manipulate my dog's spine in any way without having done extensive testing being done first. What I read here was ONE episode of IVDD. I have no idea what tests were done....and a pup put on Chinese herbs that it appeared caused side effects. I looked and looked and saw NO valid research studies that would indicate using such a treatment. If you have links to them, I would appreciate your sharing them.

I don't know what the vet advised, but the standard for care after an episode of suspected and/or proven IVDD is strict crate rest usually for about two weeks. This was not done...doors closed so he could not jump up on the bed, etc.

No one on this thread was trying to be rude. I saw people trying to help and I actually am trying to be helpful in saying that this whole thing was outside the norm in terms of what I would allow a vet to do with my pup.

I don’t disagree with you. I don’t recall that the articles I read about Double P II actually sited any studies proving it’s effectiveness in treating IVDD. I do recall, though, that at least one article specifically stated it isn’t effective in the treatment of traumatic injuries. This has been a really long thread, and I’ve only skimmed through parts of it, but my initial impression was that Cody’s vet had diagnosed a traumatic soft tissue injury or something similar. Then, of course, he had a bout of really concerning diarrhea, which seemed to be caused by the prescribed meds. If someone said Cody was suspected to have IVDD, I missed that.
